    Exclamation Daylight savings time

What time is it? Daylight savings time
    By CLIO FRANCIS - | Friday, 26 September 2008

Wind forward your clocks and dust off the barbeque - daylight saving begins this weekend.

Kiwis can look forward to more sunshine hours from this Sunday when, early in the morning, 2am becomes 3am.

Metservice forecaster Ian Gall said Sunday looked to be a nice day for most parts of the country.

The South Island could expect a fine Sunday morning, before clouding up later in the day, with rain expected on the West Coast at night.

The North Island would probably have fine weather in the morning, with clouds moving in from the west later in the day.

In 1975, daylight saving was introduced to run from the last Sunday in October each year to the first Sunday in March of the following year.

That was extended in 1990 to stretch from the first Sunday in October until the third Sunday in March.

Following the end of daylight saving in 2006 public debate was stirred when Nelson City councillor Mark Holmes and United Future leader Peter Dunne talked about the possibility of increasing the hours.

Mr Holmes ended up with an estimated 42,000 signatures on a petition in favour of an extension.

Daylight saving is now from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

    From here.
