Default Finance in NZ

Is it possible to get finance to buy a car or anything else as soon as you arrive in NZ? How do they do credit checks - or don't they bother? Do they just want proof of income? Will banks lend to you even if you don't bank with them?

Not so much the banks as they are mostly appauling to deal with, and make you feel like the scum of the earth for not having as much cash as they have, but generally shops, car yards etc will be able to arrange finance for you, as long as you have a job. They will credit check you, but your credit history will be clear.

I've heard of people going to NZ short term e.g. on a long holiday and they have bought a car rather than renting, to save money. Unless they've had the cash to buy outright I guess they may have got around it another way i.e. finance of some sort.

That is reassuring about the car yards & credit. I suppose they charge a higher rate of interest - like they do in the UK. Will stores offer the same thing for the purchase of furniture?
