Just a regular night's sleep might not be enough to recover from the flight. Jet lag aside, the flight itself is exhausting. A lot of it depends on how well you travel and recover, but be cautious if you've not put yourself to the test before.

Listen, everyone's different. It hit us hard for 3 weeks. Like we were ready for bed at 7.30 pm and wide awake at 4am. But, there are others who haven't been affected at all. As peeps say, you won't know till you've done it so err on the side of caution.

I was fine with the jet lag thing- didn't really seem to affect me but Neil on the other hand was like a zombie for about 3 days.

Thanks guys

This has been a real help :) I think bus down is the best option. A little closer to the time we'll decide whether we want to drive back

I stayed with friends in Auckland for my 1st month or so and travelled as far as Gisbourne but i arranged an interview in Tauranga for the day before so stayed there overnight drovethe 4 hrs next day and did the same on return and even got an interview in Hamilton on the way back which also gave me good insight into other areas before i made a choice.

Hi,

Maybe another option, but if there's just the 2 of you, have you considered flying to Napier from Auckland? 45 minutes and your'e there.
If you are lucky, you may be able to get flights for $99 each way, maybe less if the magic Grab A Seat comes up trumps.

As for the drive, I've done it about 4 times, but I fly whenever possible. The stretch from Taupo to Napier is nice but somewhat barren in places, and I've ended up pulling over for a nap - even when well rested. Allow about 6-7 hours to drive it generally, including stops. I'm with the others, I really wouldn't attempt it after flying in the previous day. You'll easily use at least $200 of gas as well.

Hope thats of use anyway!

Hi
When we arrived we drove from Auckland to hamilton (purley by mistake) It was a streach and my DH was really tired. Anyway, we then drove from Hamilton to Taupo via Rotorua and eventually the last streach down into Napier. We did it that way cause our destination was Napier and we wanted to see a little of the country on our way, not to mention the heaps of lugguage.
And my son goes to Taradale High so if you have any questions about the school just yell out.
Alex
