What are the laws/rules regarding children and car seats in NZ?

Has anyone with young children taken them on the plane from the UK rather than buying new in NZ?

I asked this question ages ago ....

From memory, if you have a ISO fixing car seat, they are miles ahead of the ones you can get in NZ, but don't think many of the cars can take them.

AND, you can take them on the plane, but need to arrange beforehand I think ...

I'm taking our car seats with us, they'll be going in the hold rather than on the plane with us, but because we're going to be using them as soon as we arrive and we're going to be jetlagged I'd rather have my own car seats, that I trust, then trying to rent/buy them when we get there.

Think I will give Air NZ a ring and see where we stand with them- i can't use them in our luggage allowance as we will need the full quota for our cases.

We might get away with stowing them as we won't be taking a pushchair, failing that we could send them as excess baggage- if it goes off weight it shouldn't be too much- they aren't very heavy. They have the booster seat type ones with the backs on and their own harness- not the ones with the full base on.

A lot of airlines let you take car seats without adding them to your luggage allowance, I think you're generally allowed your car seats and pram and maybe a travel cot up to a certain weight. But definitely worth checking with your individual airline. I read a thread on another forum where a family put their car seats into a packing box while they were checking in their luggage, the car seats weren't considered as part of their baggage limit and arrived safely cos they were in the box.
