I dunno ... I was just being sarcastic, but I do know that a lot of that stuff has its origins at county fairs and places like that. I think it kind of branched off from funnel cake vendors. Funnel cakes, in case you don't know, are like donuts--they're deep fried dough, but rather than being shaped by a machine, the dough is poured through a funnel into the fat in a swirl pattern. You find that mostly in the south. In the northeast you would find fried dough, which is slices of bread dough stretched out (like for a pizza crust) and deep fried.

Of course, if the Scotch Egg originated in Scotland, there's a definite possibility the deep fried mars bar did to--there's a certain kinship in the cuisine.

Is that the same outfit that does them at the Riccarton Market? If so, then *yes*! The sausages are quite nice, but the bread really puts them over the edge!

Of course, they are nothing like American hot dogs, which are bland and served in the most tasteless, textureless bread possible.

You inspired me to do a little digging, and Wikipedia has a huge list of hot dog variations from around the US.

Hot dog variations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There seems to be some confusion about the Coney Island Dogs as I remember them. The article calls them New York System dogs, though the description is not quite right.

Alright, back to the pies ... What the heck is in them? I've had a couple chicken ones that are obviously made with pieces of chicken, but the 'steak and chesse'? Is is ground up cow tongue and cornstarch and cheese flavoring? I only ask because contained in the crust was nothing I could recognize as food.

Yeah, that's the one. I don't know if it's the exact same van, but it's the same franchise.

I suspect they contain a healthy dose of 'Universal Pie Binding Agent' or similar synthetic mush. You must be eating in the wrong place. The pies from Ye Worlde Famous Sheffield Pie Shop on the way to the West Coast contain proper meat and veggies.

I remember passing that place ... four times, as I looked for the freakin' gas station. I'll have to stop there next time past. We'll be heading out to Castle Hill next nice warm Saturday we get.

Pies are one of those dodgy foods aren't they? I would never eat a bought pie or sausage for that matter you never know what the hell is in them and what they can include as meat in the percentage they print on the label is a very loose description. Ears, lips, eyelids, nostrils, tongue, skin, just all mushed up in one great big machine with cemical preservatives and flavourings and splodged out into hard animal fat laden pastry

If you must eat pies make your own. You know exactly what's in them and they're much tastier to boot. Just don't eat sausages ever!!!!!

Absolutely not Koko - try to avoid any of those fast food joints even if we do allow the kids the odd one!

You know yourself about your body being a temple and all that right And you in training as well. How's it going by the way? I've had some kind of horrible cold, coughy thing on my chest (no, not Gary) and been getting really frustrated with myself coz I can't run. Everytime I try I just can't breathe and get muscle fatigue after about 4km, same goes for any other kind of aerobic exercise I try so making do with the pilates type stuff at the minute - really, really frustrating!!

He's sure to take the gold! Meanwhile, I'll continue to work on my competitive drowning ... If I don't place, maybe Koko and I can work out a synchronized routine of bridge ramming and drowning.

We'll get our wives to stand on the bank of the river filming it for YouTube ...
