We went with State because they gave us the best price/lowest excess/highest cover. AMI were very expensive - they have to pay for all those TV 'smile' ads I suppose.

Default Choosing Banks in NZ

I'm new here, so if this has already been stated elsewhere, then forgive me...

Interest rates in New Zealand lists and compares all NZ banks products including interest rates and fee etc

I'm used to paying no fees on my bank accounts (Australia) and thought that I'd have to start paying fees until I went to this site and found that HSBC have no account keeping or transaction fees on their general savings/eft account. Think they are the only bank to do so (that I could find) only requirement is that you open account with $3000 but once done you can draw it out again ie no min balance required

The only hiccup with HSBC is that, as far as I am aware, there are only three branches in NZ. I do think they have some alliance with Westpac bank and share ATMs etc. - perhaps someone knows this for sure.

I'm not sure how the topic went from insurance to banks, but...

Depending on your balance, monthly fees can sometimes be offset by interest earned, so be sure to look at both sides.

If you're planning to do any investing / sharemarket stuff, or if you will need to convert your cash to NZD, then working with one of the bigger "native" NZ banks is definitely the way to go.

ATM availability isn't as big of an issue in NZ as it might be for people coming from the States. With an EFTPOS card, you can get some cash from the merchant as part of a purchase transaction, with no extra fees.

Having a good online banking system is pretty important these days in NZ. I think I heard that KiwiBank recently had some problems along those lines (although being able to bank at the post office is definitely tempting).

I use ASB, and love them. They have been especially helpful with various immigration-oriented issues. I ended up getting my credit card from National Bank, though, since they seem to be the only ones who offer a 1% rebate on purchases.
