Well we have been experiencing this process firsthand over the past few days and all good news to report. We phoned up the Nelson Central School on the spur of the moment to see if we could have a visit - yes, we were told, can you come now?

We did, and the principal sat us down and talked for a while and then took us on the grand tour. What a fabulous school - art everywhere, happy kids from what we could see. Wonderful grounds. In the library we listened in on an oral report one child was giving on Disneyland - super, with many parents in attendance to hear the reports.

Did I mention it turned out Friday was the last day of term, hectic, and they still managed to fit us in?

We looked at several other schools in Nelson without taking the grand tour - Nelson Intermediate and Hampden Street. The real estate agent we talked with at Bayley's turned out to be a school sub in his former job and he confirmed our general impression that these schools are solid, as well as Broadgreen and others in the area (Richmond), whichever you pick.

One comment about the decile thing - it was my impression that this is simply a measure of the economic level of the students - but it is NOT a rating. In other words, you can have a level 2 school that is actually very high achieving. Someone will correct me if I am wrong on this. I was interested btw to see a number of anglo children in the Maori classes (taught in) at Central.

Hi All,

We've been away for a few days, so I missed the start of this thread.

I would agree with KiwiHopeful that Chch seems to be besotted with the whole school zone thing. Primary schools are zoned, but they let your kids stay on the roll if you move out of zone once they're enrolled.

We're in the catchment zone for Cashere High, which is (apparently) commonly known as Trashmere. I can't say whether the reputation is deserved, but plenty of people have told us to save up for private education or move to a 'better zone' before our kids leave primary school.....
