Hey Alex,

Good to hear from you again but sad that you're having problems with your rental. Landords, eh ? What a pain. Hope you find a better rental soon with less problems.

Thumbs down it's not all good...

Bit scared about such a positive reaction to a giant of chipboard and plastic!! Don't get me wrong, inexpensive furniture is obviously a much needed product, but here in France everyone has furnished their homes or rentals ? la Ikea, and the average life of their stuff is 4 years..... if NZ is as beautiful as it sounds do we want to turn it into a landfill of unwanted outmoded furniture made by people paid tiny weeny wages?? Isn't there a second hand market for stuff that can be re vamped or re covered, maybe vintage style not contemporary?? It is SO massive with it's meatballs and uplighters and free kids' meals that I'm not sure it's all good. Oh, whilst on home furnishings are pillows square or oblong in NZ?

And yes, I do shop there, but less and less...the loo's are always clean though!

Default Ikea not coming - because they'd be too popular

Found this on Seek.

Australia is more attractive already.

The prospect of giant homeware/furnishings business Ikea opening in New Zealand has long been anticipated and hoped for by fans of their low-priced designer goods.

Rumours often circulate about the funky business opening a store here, with Auckland seen as the most likely place.

But the chances of the chain opening here just took a step backwards.

The Environment Court has banned the Swedish-headquartered furniture business from being a tenant in Redwood's new Mt Wellington venture because its stores are so popular it is feared traffic chaos will ensue.

"Ikea stores are known to have high traffic-generating characteristics," the Environment Court ruled in allowing Redwood's new shopping centre. "Accordingly, they have been specifically excluded from allowable retail activities in this consent."

Rents at Mt Wellington would make the store an unlikely candidate for either Sylvia Park or the new development.

"Ikea has been looking in New Zealand for quite a while but they couldn't afford Sylvia Park and they won't be able to afford to go on our site either," developer Tony Gapes said.

That's just not good enough . I'm sure, if they REALLY put their minds to it, they could find somewhere that's both reasonable rent-wise and in a spot where the large amounts of traffic generated could be catered for. After all, the high-traffic-generating factor is what shrieks out that Ikea is extremely popular and is wanted in NZ.

Even if you don't (as does happen) approve of their furniture quality, there's always lots of other items that are very useful around the home. For those who don't like or don't want an Ikea in NZ, well, they don't have to go there, do they?

OK, so who's going to start the petition?

It would probably burn quite well in the log burners of NZ .

We took our eldest to see an opthamologist for a check up last week. As the chap handed over the prescription for new specs, I asked which opticians he would recommend. He said "Curtis Ikea" and wrote the address on a slip of paper. Ohhh, we laughed when we parked outside Curtis Eye Care!

LOL

Reminds me of the when i started my first NZ job.

The admin manager kept on offering to get some tree's on my desk, I said that it wasn't necessary (thinking that this really is a very green country)

Luckly another ex pat pick up on my confusion and translated for me.

I was being asked if i wanted some Tray's for my desk.
