The way I understand it is that if your child is 5 Jan - June he will enter school on his 5th birthday in year 1 and move to year 2 in February. If he is 5 July - Dec he will start on his 5th birthday in year 0 and move to year 1 in February.

This system means that my elder boy would have finished year 11 in UK in July 08 and start year 12 in September but will actually start year 13 in NZ the following February and my younger son would have just started year 10 in the UK (September) but will be due to start year 11 in the February meaning they will have missed almost a year of their schooling.

Umm, that doesn't sound great does it? We wanted to move out a couple of years ago but our daughter was just starting Year 10 then and we thought it would disrupt her too much. Looks like we made the right decision if what you say is accurate. She left school last week so will be free to make up her mind what to do once we've got visas and she is eligible to return to school. She wants to go to college prior to uni.

Our son will be 12 in September and again won't be eligible for school until we get visas of some kind. He's extremely happy as he doesn't enjoy school at all. We, on the other hand want to get him back into education asap! He's the oldest in his year at the moment so that'll be all change.

Poppy will be 6 in November and as she is a law unto herself we're sure she'll fit in whatever happens!

Hi

I just posted a seperate thread asking about how they start school and about nursery and then read this- should have done this first.

My eldest will be 4 in august so I beleive that she will start school in August 08 at age 5 in year 0 to join year 1 in Feb 09?

Then I have my youngest who is quite a way of starting school yet but her birthday is 7th Decemebr so not sure how this would fit in with summer hols and then when she would start and what year (0 in dec and 1 in feb or would she start 0 in Feb) i guess she will be one of the youngest in her year instead of one of the eldest here in UK.

In my other thread I also asked if the children get a free nursery place the year before they start school as they do here in the UK.
