We flew back to the States once after being here about 4 months. My situation at the time was unusual, though. My kids and I had been in NZ since Dec 2006, but my wife was still in the US taking care of her sick mother.

Now that we're all in NZ together, it's unlikely that we'll ever go back to the States again. Things are just getting too crazy there, and travel is way too expensive. I'd rather spend our limited travel dollars seeing NZ.

I know it's not rational, but in the back of my head, with the recent stories of people accidentally getting on watch lists or no-fly lists, I'm worried they might not let us leave again... My wife and I both have family in California, but we're hoping they'll decide to visit us at some point.

Funny thing about the use of "home". I've been calling NZ home ever since we arrived, but my wife still calls the US home. Part of it, I'm sure, is when you've lived in one area your whole life like she has, there will always be a natural connection. In my case, I moved every couple of years before I got married, so wherever I am at the moment is home for me.

I'm hoping to move back to NZ very soon, I've been away for 9 years and during that time I've made it 'home' 3 times, the last time was 4 years ago. Part of it is because it costs a lot, I gather it's cheaper doing it from UK to NZ from the posts that I've read, but it's the time commitment as well. I planned on going back to see family every other year, but when you factor in the cost and the time, and the fact that there's a whole lot of world that I still need to explore it just hasn't happened. I think realistically for us we'll be coming back to the UK for a visit every 4 to 6 years, and hopefully have some family and friends coming to NZ to see us so that it doesn't seem too long between seeing them.

And as for where I call home, well I'm just not sure, I always call NZ home, but I also call England home and do feel like I'm 'home' here, I guess home is where the heart is. I am terrified though that when I get back to NZ that it won't feel like home...not quite sure what I'll do then.

Just dropped my house price by ?5k today (sob sob) so hopefully that will get me back to NZ soon.

It's the system that's not rational. Your reaction is perfectly rational.

I'll admit, I actually self-censored the books I was taking as carry-on. I bought a book called 'The Men Who Stare at Goats', with this cover:

I bought it to read on the plane because as you can imagine, it's funny stuff about the US military's attempts to harness the power of the paranormal. But after reading about how some people had been stopped at security and turned back because of reading material, I decided to pack it instead.

Who wants to live like that?

I'm 16 years old and my family and I moved to Wellington in September.

I'm off home for 2 weeks in July - on my own - but I just can't wait to see friends again and generally be back after a spell of nearly a year.

I plan to do the same in July 09.

And by July 10, I'll be soon to leave for university in London

I have it all planned out really and my parents are happy for me - they've decided to stay in New Zealand though..

I have been back to the UK twice in 6 years. The first time my OH's job took us back and last July I went back with my daughter as she was old enough to understand who was who. We call NZ home and I certainly enjoyed coming back. In our 6 years we have had many. many, many visitors. Going back and realising who means what to you is a good experience.
In a year or two we are going to meet family and friends in Florida. They are going to book a big villa from their end and we are going to join them.
