Daylight saving to be longer in spring

Daylight saving is set to be extended next summer in the hope of taking advantage of more long, warm evenings - especially in March.

The clocks are due to go back an hour on Sunday morning, but this year's late summer has brought pressure to extend daylight saving in future.

Prime Minister Helen Clark all but confirmed that Cabinet would approve an extension. "Yes, we are looking at it and it's really a question of how much."

New times can be set by regulation. No law change is required.

A switch before the weekend is considered logistically impossible, as, for example, airline timetables have already been set.

Grrrr. Don't get me started on Daylight Stupid Time. >:( In the US, they just moved the start to March, so now I'm getting up in the dark, just like in the depths of winter. Grrrr.

Daylight savings only four weeks away

Spring is here and that means there's only four weeks to the start of the new, longer period of daylight saving.

Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker has issued a reminder that daylight saving begins a week earlier this year, on Sunday September 30.

Clocks go forward an hour, and daylight saving will end on Sunday April 6 instead of the usual third Sunday in March.

"The new period of daylight saving will provide people with an extra hour of daylight in the evening to enjoy the outdoors," Mr Barker said.

"It will also avoid a clash with the start of the fourth school term, which has caused disruptions for schools and families in the past."

The Government decided in April to extend daylight saving by three weeks, to a 27-week period.

The move followed a petition, launched by UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne and Nelson city councillor Mark Holmes, which was signed by about 42,000 people.

This always confuses me - will NZ now be 12 hours ahead of the UK or 10 hours? They are currently 11 hours ahead.

There's 3 different sets of timings - the current one (11 hours ahead) , another one where NZ clocks go forward, but the UK ones don't (12 hours) and then a third one where the UK clocks go back (13 hours).

Is that right? Guess it's going to screw up the radio show schedule good and proper.

Summer Time Glitch

While many New Zealanders are looking forward to the new daylight saving hours next weekend, the IT industry is busy preparing for time-related problems.

Clocks go forward a week earlier, tomorrow week, and go back on Sunday, April 6.

However some computers, mobile phones and business software will not automatically make the time change and experts say problems are likely to ensue.

Confirming what Mother Bear said above, now that daylight saving has started in NZ, there is 12 hours difference between NZ and the UK, whereas before we were 11 hours ahead.

Daylight saving ends in the UK (and the whole of the European Union) on 28th October. At that time the difference between the two times will make us 13 hours ahead ...

... I think.

It is too soon to tell if this summer's extended daylight saving period has been a success, the Government says.

Daylight saving time officially ends tomorrow at 3am, when clocks should be put back an hour to 2am but most people will alter their timepieces before going to bed tonight.

New Zealand had an extra three weeks of daylight saving this summer, after more than 42,000 people signed a petition to Parliament in 2006 calling for the extension.

A spokesman for Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker said yesterday the change was permanent but the Government would still canvass the nation's views on it.

The research would be done for the Department of Internal Affairs by an independent research company and a report on the extension's "impact upon electricity consumption, traffic accidents and tourism" was expected to be with the minister mid-year.

Barker would reserve judgment on whether the change had been successful until this research had been completed, his spokesman said.

In 1975, daylight saving was introduced to run from the last Sunday in October each year to the first Sunday in March of the following year.

That was extended in 1990 to stretch from the first Sunday in October until the third Sunday in March.

Daylight saving is now from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

Federated Farmers president Charlie Pedersen said farmers had mixed feelings about the extra weeks but were "as partial to a beer and a barbecue or an evening game of tennis as the next person".

Supporters of the extension said it would help the economy, save power and encourage tourists.

Daylight saving starts again on Sunday, September 28, at 2am, when clocks should be put forward an hour.
