Shoppers warned about substandard Christmas lights
9.45am Thursday November 23, 2006



Shoppers hoping to light up their Christmas are being warned to watch out for shonky and potentially dangerous Christmas light sets which were being sold through discount and low-price chain stores.

The lights have been ordered off the shelves, but there is concern some may still be about.

Associate Energy Minister, Harry Duynhoven, said the lights did not meet New Zealand safety codes and could cause an electric shock.

The low cost lights were commonly sold in unmarked plastic bags or boxes labelled "Christmas Tree Lights", or "Decorative Lighting".

Hi Mother Bear,

I'm not surprised, you should see the tack in the shops here at the moment!! Worse than the UK for sure!! It all looks so cheap and plastic but they still charge a small fortune for it all!!

I couldn't agree more, DebD. with the fact that all the Xmas tat is so expensive here - I went into the Christmas shop that has just appeared here in Tauranga, and they were selling a 8 foot fake Xmas tree for $995!!! :o I asked if that included all the baubles, tinsels, lights etc that it was displayed with and was told that no, that was just for the tree!!! Am so glad that all our decorations and our ?50 fake Xmas tree are safely here, and not in the 50 boxes still waiting to be shipped.

Hi Maggie,

Wow $1000???? Madness!
I'm so glad too that we brought our nice decs with us but we always buy a real tree and there seem to be plenty being sold just about everywhere, (including the roadside, ha), so we'll be getting ours this Sunday after Isaac's kindy Christmas Float Parade!! I hope they're not a rip off too!
I do miss the run up to Christmas though, okay I don't miss the endless adverts, (except the yummy M&S ones, ha)....... I'm now about to make some glitter paper chains with the kids!!

Blimey ... $995 for a Christmas tree?! ?

Unless one lives in a very posh house in need of a very posh Christmas tree, there is a pleasant-looking 6ft. delux one at The Warehouse for $37.99, and a very much nicer 8ft one for around $108. ?
