    Default NZ Vegetables and vegetarians

How to recognise, put a name to or prepare and cook your NZ vegetables . ?There's no excuse for not eating them now. ?Think of all those vitamins.? ;)

Oh vegetables, I thought you meant vegetarians. From what I've heard Kiwis seem to like their meat, meat and more meat. How will us veggies do over there?

i also looked in hear as ally and the kids (their choice, before social services step in)are veggies,
they found enough to eat on our visit although the choice was far less but also found things not available in the uk.Mashed kurmera was real good.
if we had been there longer we would have found more and alteratives to what we get in the uk .
well lets see if i am able to post now

I appear to have disappointed a couple of people here so, to make amends, here?s a few sites that may be of interest.

Vegetarian Society contains veggie friendly restaurants etc.
    Veg Dining. Another restaurant/cafe guide.
Happy Cow. Guide to restaurants and health food shops.
Vegetarian Vacations. ?Vegetarian accommodation in NZ.
Vegetarian Classified . ?All things veggie-related in North Island.

This may be helpful in deciding when's the best (cheapest) time to buy your vegetables and also the best time to bung some in the freezer for more expensive out-of-season periods.

Just noticed, how strange that peas are always in short supply or unavailable. ?Don't they grow very well in NZ?

Snow peas, however, are available for much of the year and I thought they were only young peas picked before they plump out.

Nope, snow peas are a different variety, which have more tender & sweetish pods. If you let them go too long, they'll develop plump peas which are tasty enough, but not as big as "regular" snap peas. I've also grown "sugar pods" which can do double duty as snow or snap peas. Peas ought to grow well enough in NZ, though not when/where the weather gets warm (e.g. above 18C or so). They're a cool weather crop.

I don't think I've ever seen snap peas in a US market, even the farmer's markets. I guess they're too much work for most folks. Personally, I love grazing out in my garden, and have to discipline myself to save some veggies for the kitchen. To think I grew up with canned veggies, and thought they were good!
