Question Can we move to New Zealand and start working before receiving PR ?

    Hi everybody

First of all I'd like to say it's a GREAT forum - thanks to all who participate and give such useful advice !

While reading all the posts about PR, I've started to realize that we may be a bit short of time with our plans...

Our EOI was selected on November 5th with 135 points and a job offer. As we live in Switzerland, I understood we would deal with the London branch (luckily they seem to give quick answers).

We have to give our flat away at the end of January, we are already planning the shipment of our stuff in a sea container sometime in January. And we intended to fly at the end of February because we are both expected to start our new job in March !

Now, because there may be little chance that the whole process is over at the end of February, does anybody know if there is a way for us to enter New Zealand and start working (and send our stuff without having to pay taxes...) before we get the precious stickers ?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Swissgodairy (what an unusual username ). Welcome to MTNZ.

What many people do when they are running out of time to get to NZ to start a job and their PR hasn't come through yet, is to apply for a temporary work permit (if you apply from within NZ otherwise a work visa if you apply from outside the country) which will see them through until PR is granted. If you can get a work visa for a certain length of time (think it might be 12 months plus) you should be able to import your belongings free of GST (taxes). The set up for applying under the various categories has changed recently and everything now appears to be lumped together under the Essential Skills Policy .

We applied for a 12month work permit to cover us until the PR comes through. I beleive that if you have 12 months or over you can bring in your shipment tax free- I hope so anyway as ours is due end of the month and doubt our PR will be ready.

    Thanks for your answers.
When you apply for a work permit, do you need to send all the official documents again (certified copies, certified translations, medical check etc.) if you have already sent them in your application for residence ? This would increase the costs (that we find quite heavy already...).
Ebianca, we hope your PR is going to be ready soon !

I beleive that if all your medicals and police certificates are still valid ( i.e still les sthan 3 months old or 6 months old) then they can be used for your work permit application.
If you are only going to apply for a 12month work permit (this is what we did as we felt that would be sufficient time to sort PR) then you don't need any medicals.

And I guess this means the job needs to be advertised first in NZ...
SO the best thing we may have to do is to wait (a bit) and see - and if we realize we are definitely not going to make it with the PR before we leave, we'll go for a work permit. Hope this works !
    Thanks for your advice.
