Looks like we may have to start over from scratch

We are in the process of getting advice from a specialist Endocrinologist next month to argue that my Hubby will not cause a drain to the NZ health system. He has hypertension, which has been well controlled for 20 years. From what little info NZIS will give us, they feel that this, and his high BMI puts him at risk of metabolic syndrome. We are making real efforts to loose weight/ cut out the booze/ don't smoke etc, but at the moment, no-one will say what would constitute an acceptable level of weight loss to be let in
The whole thing is such a grey area- we know that Fred is at risk of developing health problems, but as no-one will quantify that risk, how can we adress it? They have said that they would look at any supporting evidence. In the meantime, his medical will be looked at again; probably fail again...medical waiver...? appeal...? residence review board... it all that fails, we will have to try again next year We are gutted 'coz he only sees the doc about twice a year for a BP check! We would be paying for his tablets anyway, and would be happy to have a clause put on our visa to make us pay for any treatments for him, if it swung thingsARE YOU LISTENING NZIS! We havent been beat yet, we may be hear for some time

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble.
Surely they should be able to tell you what you need to do to be accepted medically otherwise like you said how are you menat to sort things out.

Don't give up trying though- you will get there eventually.

Hope things get better for you soon- especially if you've had an offer on the house.

What a pain, Ali, especially when your Fred could possibly continue on for another 20+ years on just tablets, as he is now. It's INZ being uber-cautious, but they should at least give you a goal to aim for. It's a case of 'how long is a piece of string?' at the moment.

Hope you can get some sense out of someone so you know where you stand.

tell us about it we are trying to get info together to strengthen our case, but as I say, it is pretty hard to argue when it seems impossible to quantify the level of risk that Fred is at. He may have an 80% chance of developing heart disease/ diabetes etc, but that's not to say that he will. It's something that is impossible to forsee. It feels like NZIS are pretty inflexible on this- they have been told to clamp on these risky symptoms- I have asked for clarity as exactly what level of risk they think he has, and how much they feel he will cost the health service etc, but they wont give an answer We have an appointment with a consultant next month- it's going to be fun asking him to try to risk assess Fred, when we are talking about what might or might not happen in 20 yrs time! I am going to ask our GP to give us a summery of costs that he would have cost them over the 6yrs since we have been with them. That might help our case. We can also show that his hypertention is not weight related as he has been treated for it for 20 yrs- before his weight gain I know they can afford to be choosy as who to let in, but apparently 20% of the population are at risk of Metabolic Syndrome- just seems more than a little harsh

As long as Surgery is not needed in the next 4-5 years then we might be OK.
