Default anyone had to do a glucose tolerance test?

At the medical the dr said being overweight I need a glucose tollerance test done.
My GP does not do them and says I would probably have to go privately - I don't care just as long as pass the medical

However the GP has also said that (as I thought also ) that it would be a complete waste of time as I an insulin sensitising drug (for other reasons than diabetes) which will render the results of the test meaningless.

Help!

Well moggy, if thats what they want you to do, then just do it! If you pass because of your medication, then thats their problem!! You did what they asked, after all :icon_wink:

I'll do it if i have to obviously, but the main problem is finding how to get it done as the NHS won't pay for a useless test.

Couldnt your doctor write you a statement outlining that? Surely that would make more sense than going to pay for a test where the results are tainted!

I'm sure NZIS would be happy with a statement to that effect from your doctor.

I am trying to get back in touch with the doc who did the medical, it could have been why she didn't mention it at first, it was the secretary who had picked up on it and the doc a week or so later would have forgotten about the drug that would interfer with it.

anyway hopefully she will get back in touch on monday

I got mine done at the University (USA) I was going to, about 4 years ago. Not sure on where you could get it done though in England....but here's an outline of what happens:

It's pretty time consuming.

Step 1 - take a blood sample
Step 2 - They give you a really sweet drink
Step 3 - 30ish minutes take a blood sample
Step 4 - 30ish minutes take a blood sample
Step 5 - 30ish minutes take a blood sample

I forgot if it was every 30 or every 60.

The point of the test (you probably know this, but I'll insult your intelligence anyway ;-)) is to see if your body absorbs sugar at a normal rate. If it does it too slowly or too fast that indicates there could be a problem.

I passed out at step 4. I'm normally fine with needles. I wasn't scared of them that day. But at times people pass out when blood is being taken, just happened to be my time.

Luckily for me everything came back normal. That drink was good, like Sprite on sugar steroids. :icon_twisted:

Ooh, I may have found something that won't insult your intelligence ;-)

http://www.harrowpct.nhs.uk/files/do...fo%20sheet.pdf

I'm sure you can call them and they'll know of a clinic in or around Leeds.

Or maybe diabetes.org.uk will have info on testing centres
