Hi Lianne and welcome to the forum.

Have you any idea which part of NZ you're hoping to settle in? It quite often works out that people end up in an area where the jobs are, so it pays to be flexible in your choices. It would be difficult to give advice on such things as schools until you (and we ) know where you're likely to end up.

Here's a few links to more general information on schools and the system in NZ, which you may find useful. If you have any more specific questions then please feel free to ask them on the forum where we have quite a lot of members who are in NZ and have school-age children.

School zones
State school term times and holidays
Reports on various schools
Find a school in your area
Government-based site with education information for migrants

Good luck with the job hunting.
