Default how can i get into new zealand

Hi All.................. thanks so much for your comments albiet a bit confusing, my parents would be the main sponsers having lived in NZ for 7 years, its how long my brother has to be there thats the problem, he has the skills in IT to have no problem getting in, its just that im getting different feedback from consultancys that he would have to live there 3 years before i could be accepted and the family quota is the slowest way to get in so thats another year, maybe i will have to up my qualys or is there a kiwi out there whod like to marry me?

I know he would have to have held PR in NZ for 3 years before he could sponsor you, but your parents are doing the sponsoring so I wouldn't like to say that would apply. Be wary of what consultants tell you. They charge a lot of money and still don't perform. We may get it wrong on here at times, but at least we don't charge heftily for it .

I tried to look on the INZ Operations Manual for any hints on how long your brother would have to be in NZ before he was considered as being helpful to your application, but couldn't find anything relevant to your particular situation.

Your best bet would be to get it from the horse's mouth, INZ, although even they aren't always consistent in their info, but at least you can quote them.

Short of your parents sponsoring you, alternative ways of getting in are by investing a substantial sum of money in NZ for 2 years (Investor Visa) or starting/buying a business in NZ (Long Term Business Visa). Usually, with the latter, you need to have been running a similar business for some time before you apply but, in our member Macfod's case, this didn't turn out to be true and he got his business and his LTBV with no previous experience. .

Default getting into new zealand

thats interesting because my first thought was getting a business there, i wanted a cattery something like that and nothing to do with accounting, i was told by a consultant and also on the nz immigration site that you have to have had business experience in the uk first for a number of years and it had to be the same type of business so i ruled that out, i wonder how the person you mentioned managed to get round that.
I did try going into the EOI pool with my accounting qualifications and i was selected but they wouldnt accept the job offer i had from my parents business which wasnt in accountancy and thats where im stuck now, i have tried job agencys in NZ but they wont even consider me without seeing me its seems to be blank walls wherever i turn, thats why my brother seemed worth a try even though he doesnt really want to live in New Zealand more than he has to.
I wonder what Dawn meant by it depends how brave you are there are ways and means, any idea?

This is what we all understood, so you can imagine how amazed we were when Macfod bought a cafe business and went on to get his LTBV without having had any previous experience or qualifications. I know INZ is very keen for people to employ kiwis and Macfod's business already had kiwi staff when he took it over. so that may have swung it for him. Perhaps you could drop him a PM to see if he's got any helpful info for you or start a new thread in the main body of the forum asking about it where Macfod is more likely to see it.

Yes, this is pretty normal. NZ employers prefer to see you face to face because a lot of prospective migrant employees never actually make it to NZ, so it's been a waste of time for the employers. Making your way to see them in NZ shows commitment and they may take you more seriously.

Maybe Dawn was referring to what Macfod did. He just took himself off to NZ and set about buying a business and applying for his LTBV without a hope of succeeding. Yet he did it. He was determined to succeed and he did. I wouldn't like to say it would work for everyone, but if one can do it..........

Hi Tabitha,
FWIW my OH & I booked flights, emailed our CV's to a couple of companies and told them the dates we would be in NZ and available for interview if they were interested.
We flew out in August, I had already been contacted by a company and had an interview lined up for a few days after we arrived. A company contacted my OH whilst we were there and invited him for interview. As a result we both now have confirmed job offers!
It's like MB said in her response that it is showing a prospective employer that you are keen and serious about moving to NZ.
Hope this helps/ offers some encouragement. Good Luck.

Default Macfod and other options

I have been looking at Macfods posts and will see if i can get more info from him.
Regarding going to new zealand for say a month looking for job offers i can do that but would they want to employ me when they know i would have to return to the Uk to sell my house and that could take 6 months what employer is going to wait that long for me.

Both my OH and I explained our circumstances at interview and both employers were very understanding. All they have asked for is that we keep them informed of our progress. I have a start date of February 2008 but have been told this is negotiable. MY OH's employer is happy to wait for him. It seems that NZ employers are aware of the situation with people trying to migrate and the delays they may experience with the immigration process.
Have you thought about renting you house out? I am unsure of your age and circumstances but could you go on a work visa? My friend & her family went to OZ on a work visa last July when her OH obtained employment. They shipped out their belongingsand rented their house out through an agent to ensure the mortgage was covered. They have settled and have now sold the house in the UK, are in the process of buying a property and of obtaining PR. Sometimes it is a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained.............. I know it seems scary believe me.............. but as a worst case scenario, if it doesn't work out you could always come back...!!!!!Good luck. Mel

At the very least, during your one month visit you can get an impression of how desireable you and your skills are to potential employers. If you're "hot", you might decide to go back to sell the house and leap back into NZ life without making sure you have a job. If the job market is iffy, you might make another type of plan. So much will depend on your flexibility.

Karin & I are more cautious than many of the youthful and daring folks on the forum. We figure we'll go over to look for work and make our final decision. If an immediate & desirable job pops up, Karin will stay, and I'll come back to the US to wrap up all our loose ends.

Good luck!
