Cool Moving to Wellie this year!

We are moving to Wellington later this year (2012)! We (myself, my husband, young daughter and faithful dog) are very excited and can't wait for our new life. I have joined as I have so many questions - mainly about the dog. We visited NZ on our honeymoon and fell in love with the place did some research around Wellington, so have an idea about where we would like to buy/live. My husband has just been offered a job with a company out in Wellington so we are all systems go!

    Hi and welcome.

Good news about the job . Having a job to go to is a great start in a new country. Don't worry about your dog. He/she will be fine. We have dragged our cats from country to country with my hubby's job and they acted as if nothing had happened. I'm sure we humans worry a lot more than our pets do.

    Thanks MotherBear!

We could not make the move if it was not for the job offer, however after reading on lots of forums we are now worried about the NZ attitudes to immigrants! Can I ask how you have found it over there, and if you have had any problems?

    Cheers

Well, we haven't actually been living in NZ yet because our residency is only just going through although we have spent long periods of time there and have a home in Hamilton. My son and his family have been living in NZ for quite a few years and have a wide circle of friends both expat and kiwi and I've never heard of any difficulty either socially or at work. I also know of other Brits in a similar position and they have never mentioned having a problem. Personally, we've made some good kiwi friends and haven't had any problems ourselves, but have heard the odd negative post on here from people who found it otherwise. I would think it could depend a lot on where people settle and how well they try to fit in with the kiwis rather than expecting them to fit in with us. Living in or near the cities may be easier than out in the sticks because there tend to be more migrants around there. I guess there are always problem areas in any country, so it's a case of accepting the bad with the good. A willingness to approach kiwis with friendliness is always welcome rather than waiting for them to approach you. There will always be people for whom life isn't easy no matter where they settle and there are always two sides to a story so immigrating to NZ is a leap of faith that should only be taken after doing some serious research and then praying that you've made the right choice of where to settle. Going there with an open mind ready to embrace your new life and all that it involves also helps. From what I've learnt, there are many, many more happy migrants than unhappy ones.

I lived & worked in Chch for 8 months. My work colleagues were great (in the second job I had). Really friendly & helpful. In fact when I cane to leave work to return to the UK (I had only been there for 4 months) they had a collection for me and had written some lovely messages in my card. I actually cried when I left because they were such a lovely bunch. We lived a bit out of town so never socialised much but the invites were there. We did make friends with some ex pats. In both jobs I held I never encountered any problems with being English. Both colleagues and patients were fine. If anything it helped keep a conversation going. No problems either with officials - post office, banks etc.... You'll be fine as long as you don't keep every one at arms length :)
