Default Visitors permit into students permit

    Hello,
I was wondering if it is difficult to change a visitor's permit into a student's permit. You do quite some (financial) investment as a foreigner into the country, so this investment should get appreciated by immigration. Has anybody had any experiences, because the visitors permit is for GENUINE tourists, and studying is not genuine is it?
    Thanks,
    Neville

I wouldn't think there would be any problem to converting a visitor permit into a student one.

    What a visitor’s permit allows

A visitor’s permit allows you to stay in New Zealand as a visitor for a limited amount of time. It allows you to:
    • visit as a tourist
    • visit friends or relatives
    • play sport or perform in cultural events
    without pay
    • enter New Zealand to get married.

A visitor’s permit allows you to study one course
of up to three months. If you want to study:
    • more than one course,
    • for longer than three months, or
    • at a primary, intermediate or secondary school
you will need to apply for a student visa/permit.

You can continue reading about it here on page 3.

Thanks for the answer, I was just wondering if it might have a negative effect once you are in the country. They might ask you to leave and reapply from outside for a students visa.

I shouldn't think so. As long as you are continually covered by a valid visa/permit, you should be OK. I guess you would just need to make your application for a student's permit in plenty of time for it to be processed before your visitor permit expired. I know of people on visitor permits who find a job and apply for a work permit, all without leaving the country, so it should be the same for student permits.

Plenty of time in advance... I guess a few days before the expiry date of visitor's permit (next week) does not count as plenty of time. Any recommendations on how to deal with the situation, if the only thing missing is the sufficient amount of money. Money is on the way though, and the course has already been paid (starts in Feb.). Handing in an almost complete application, better wait for it to be complete and file an application 48 hours before expiry date, extend tourist permit, etc.
