    Arrow Skilled Migration for Economists???

    Hi All,

I've a question, my friend has done Masters in Economics and has got 4 years of Financial Banking experience. Can he apply for skilled migration in NZ???

As I've seen on Long Term Shortage Skills List and Immediate Shortage Skills List; he doesn't seem to have enough chances but can anyone clarify his options???

    Eagerly awaiting response...

    Keep Cool,
    Max

What exactly is your friend's job title? I can't get into the shortages lists at the moment to see what jobs are on there because my Internet connection is on go-slow again . Basically, if his job title appears on the LTSSL and he has either work experience and/or a qualification to back it up, he should be able to apply for PR if he has sufficient points. That is the only way he can apply directly for PR. If his job title is on the ISSL, he can apply for a work visa and work his way to residence after 2 years of working in such a job in NZ. He would, obviously, need a job offer to be able to apply for the WTR visa. Alternatively, if he could find a job with an accredited employer, he could also work his way to residency.

What if my occupation is not on one of the lists?

If you want to apply for a temporary work visa/permit (or recruit temporary workers from overseas), the occupation does not have to be on one of the lists. The employer must show that they have genuinely searched for suitably qualified and trained New Zealander workers, and we will undertake a labour market test. Alternatively, an employer with Approval in Principle may be able to recruit employers from overseas.

    Thanks MB,

My friend's job title is "Assistant Manager" within a Bank. His qualification is Masters in Economics.

I hope he finds his way out to NZ and share the flight to NZ with me...

There are a few banks listed on the Accredited Employers site so his best bet would be to try to get a job offer from one of them. He can then work his way to residence. I can't seem Assistant Manager on the LTSSL so he wouldn't be able to apply for PR directly.
