    Default permanent residence

    hi everyone!

my family is moving to nz at the end of the year, and i am a non principal applicant under my dads application.
the problem is that i want to stay in south africa next year to finish studying.
so i will go over at the end of the year to get my passport stamped, and this will get me my returning residents visa which is valid for 2 years, and come back to SA.
what i want to know is whether im still considered a permanent resident if i go back to SA for the year, while my family (the principle applicant) remains in nz?
or will my family be permanent residences and i will only start my permanent residency when i get back to nz at the end of next year?

When you get your residence visa in your passport and you enter NZ to validate it, the clock will start ticking. After that time, you should really remain in NZ for 184 days in each of the first 2 years to be able to qualify for your Indefinite Returning Resident's Visa (which means you can come and go as you please without worrying about losing your residency). If you don't do this, you have the option to renew the RRV until such time as you have completed the necessary period in NZ i.e. 2 years x 184 days. If you only want to stay out of NZ for the first year, in the second year you can count that as year 1 if you stay in the country for the 184 days (or longer). Before your RRV expires (at the end of year 2) you can apply to renew and will likely get an additional 12-month RRV which, added to your year 1 compliance should give you the necessary 2 years x 184 days that you need to get your IRRV. Sorry, I hope you can understand my garbled explanation.

    Twelve Months
You qualify for a 12 month RRV if:
you held a Residence Permit at a time which was a
minimum of 1 year before the date your current application
for an RRV is made, and
you meet the requirements set out in either of the two
    situations below.
    Time spent in New Zealand
You have held residence permits for a total of 184 days or
more in at least one of the two 12 month portions of the 24
months immediately before lodging your RRV application
    .

You send in your passport when you submit your ITA. If there is a problem with this i.e. perhaps you need it for foreign travel, you can send in a certified copy of this. Later on, INZ will need your passport anyway to put in your residency stickers.
