Yes, they reckon it could hold for some time as reported here. The Omani rial to NZ$ is doing very well, too.

    Cool

The NZD broke through .50 to .49 to the USD. This was a significant support level. Now that it has gone though this price will act as resistance. In plain English it will possibly go down some more and will be slow to go back up unless there is some news or action by the government to drive it back up.
    Cheers

Looks like the good times are over, for the time being anyway.

I missed the boat when I tried to transfer some GBP to open an account in NZ while the NZ$ was low. Sent a signed letter requesting the transfer but could see online that nothing had moved. A month later I received a letter saying they couldn't do the transfer because they wanted to update my details. I phoned them last night, as requested, but after spending 6 GBP on my phonecard being shifted from dept. to dept., my card ran out and I was left with nothing. Bah! I don't think I'll be repeating that as it's too expensive, too much hassle and I've lost the window on the good rate now. A new and more user-friendly bank account is needed methinks.

MB I tend to resist technological change but I've got to admit that Skype is where it's at.

Yes, probably so Duane but, unfortunately, Skype is banned here .

Further to my mini saga above, because I could see nothing had been moved from my account after a month I had then written to my local branch of the bank rather than the impersonal centralised bank somewhere in deepest, darkest England I'd originally written to. Today I received a call from the local bank. She asked me how much I wanted to transfer and then said she'd do it right away. Simple! Why couldn't it have gone like that in the first place? Anyway, due to the drop in the exchange rate, I've transferred GBP to my GBP account in NZ and will transfer it to my NZD account when the rate improves again (she said hopefully ).

Oh well, that's that then. Back to playing the waiting game again.

Currency: NZ dollar at highest in 10 weeks
    9:45AM Tuesday Mar 24, 2009

The New Zealand dollar climbed above US57c for the first time in 10 weeks as risk appetite improved after United States Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner outlined the details of a bank rescue plan.

By 8am the kiwi was buying US57.12c up from US56.52c at 5pm yesterday.

BNZ Capital currency strategist Danica Hampton said the NZ dollar gained against the greenback as global equities surged and investors were cheered by the US Treasury's new programme.

The strong rebound in global equities and improving risk appetite bolstered demand for growth sensitive currencies such as the NZ dollar, particularly against the yen.

By today's local open the NZ dollar was at 55.33 yen, near an 11-week high against the Japanese currency reached a few hours earlier.

It was up from 54.45 yen at yesterday's local close.

Ms Hampton said that in addition to a range of speculative players, Japanese accounts had shown solid appetite for the NZ dollar yesterday and overnight.

The NZ dollar also reached a 10-week high against the euro around 0.4205 early today, from 0.4136 at 5pm, before easing to 0.4190 by 8am.

The kiwi reached its highest level in nearly 10 weeks against the Australian dollar above A81.50c early today but was down to A81.28c by the local open, only slightly above the A81.10c at the local close. The trade weighted index rose to 56.41 at 8am from 55.88 at 5pm.
