Default Spoke with Immigration this morning!

I called immigration in Washington DC this morning to find out if it would be a problem for my husband to continue working overseas if we moved to NZ. The really nice lady on the phone said that I could still come over on a work visa and kids on a student visa and husband could either come in on a work or visit visa. OR if we go the residency route that I could apply as the primary and have husband as my dependent and as long as I am in country for the 184 days then it doesn't matter if he is there or not. Plus if we buy a home it will help my application for residency (which I kind of already knew).

So it looks like husband and I are going to fly to NZ around July for us to scout around and see where we want to live and for me to look for potential employers. With an ideal move date of late Dec of 2009. That way kids can start the new school year in Feb. Plus we will have some time there to get used to NZ before they start.

I am thrilled with the news!

That's great news . I also found it very interesting because I could find myself in a similar position if my husband wants to work on for a while after we get PR. I will be the principal applicant so I could stay in NZ while he works abroad. We also have property in NZ so it's all good.

Since you mentioned property...is it okay to buy property in NZ without being a resident or having any family there? Like say a vacation home? I would like to rent for 6 months or so before we buy but if a good deal came across our path while visiting I would like to know if we could buy the home without any major problems when we are not residents.

Yes, you can buy without being a resident. There are certain restrictions about not buying certain prime sites, but otherwise it's OK.

That's good news, StatsChick. Congrats Helpful info for the rest of us, too.
