Default Cellular phone service in NZ

I was doing a little research on cell phone service in NZ and came across Vodaphone. They seemed really expensive for what few minutes that you actually get per month. Are there other carriers there who have better plans? How is cellular service there? Coverage pretty decent?

Since my husband works overseas and I will be there I will need cell service for when he calls at weird times. Any info would be great!

Are cell phones as common there as say in the US or London?

    Hi,

The cell phone network here isn't very cheap no matter what carrier you go with. The two major ones are Telecom and Vodafone, but there are others such as Telstraclear, Boost and a few smaller ones. The coverage is pretty good all over, unless you go way out in to the countryside.

If your phone is going to be mainly for incoming calls, then a Pay As You Go mobile might be better? There are no monthly contract fees, you only pay when you make a call. You just top up your phone with credit when required.

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.

Yes cell phomes are as popular here as in the UK or US but as Taffy said the costs are away more expensive.

I brought over my V3xx last year which was a year old at that time and it was still retailing here for $600nz !!

Most companies use 24month contracts to tie you into and the deals are shocking to say the least.

Id stick with a pay as you go

If your current cell phone isn't locked to a specific network you can bring it over and just buy a Vodafone pay and go sim card for about $35 and use that rather than buying a new phone and signing to a long contract.

Thanks, my questions were answered. Looks like I will get an unlocked phone before I head over and do a pay as you go since most of the calls will be incoming.
