    Not intrusive at all.

I currently live in Oman due to my husband working here. Originally from South Wales but hoping to retire to NZ in a couple of years. Taffy, the owner of this site, is my son (although I'm sure he'll try to deny it ) so I just help out on here to give him a break, as he's a busy chappy.

We're going to start the ball rolling for PR early next year (under Family Sponsorship) as we don't want to wait too long in case the government/INZ decide to move the goal posts, as they are inclined to do from time to time. We'd hate to miss out just because they've changed the rules.

Well, we'd already decided we didn't want to retire to the UK - too cold, too wet, too miserable, too expensive, too.... We had a house built in Spain but, when we went to take it over, the quality was horrifyingly poor so we sold it on quickly to someone who had the time to put everything right. We also thought about settling here in the Middle East but, weighing it up, we decided against it as the cost of living and accommodation has gone through the roof in the last 2 years and the summer climate is very harsh. It has also become too commercialised and the people are changing for the worse.

Then Taffy and WG decided to immigrate to NZ which led us to consider retiring there. The kiwis speak the same language (although it often doesn't sound like it ), they are generally a friendly and helpful bunch and the climate is pretty moderate. Cost of living wasn't bad at the time we made our decision, but, like a lot of places now, it has become more expensive to live there. We've made a couple of visits to NZ and felt quite at home there so we've stuck with the decision to go there. Of course, we still have the obstacle of getting PR to overcome. If that doesn't work out, we'll just have to look elsewhere.

And you, have you visited NZ previously or was your decision to settle there down to your kiwi partner wanting to go home?

Hi motherbear, I have never been to NZ and the decision was a mutual decision that we dont want our son growing up in a violent country like the UK, especially were I am in Liverpool crime is very high. So having the option to go to NZ was to good to turn down, so applied for PR couple of weeks later was granted it - very quick and efficient service from INZ London.
Applied For PR (OH is a Kiwi) 25th May 2008
    Granted PR 14th July 2008
    Leave UK 28th August 2008
Land in Auckland 29th August 2008
Arrive at Mount Manuganui 30th August 2008
