Local joke in greymouth: If it is not raining, it will soon. It rains on lot on the west coast. You will be on the west coast of the south island. Coasters can be quite independent and unique thinking.

If you prefer out of the big city you will love it. Train trip from Chch to Greymouth through the mountains is one of the top 10 in the world.

I hope you enjoy it there.

    Cheers

No, i would not consider it dreary.

Jobs are fewer in the area. Consider yourself lucky to be posted there. There si some nice rain forest in the area.

You will be known by everyone very fast.

Hi there, we spent a couple nights in Greymouth at the end of summer.
    I thought it was lovely.
It was a bit drizzly now and then, but still a lovely place. Some nice houses too.
We drove through to Shanty town for the day, which isnt far from Greymouth, and we had great fun.
We were in the top 10 holiday park and the beach was right behind us.
The towns not bad also,we were in a cosy wee pub for a meal with a lovely big roaring log fire, and the woman running it was really friendly.
    Meal was good too.
And the thing is once you are here,if G/ mouth doesnt suit you can always apply for a transfer.
We hear bad things about where we are in Chch, but we love it here,so its down to what your looking for really.
    Have you got kids?
