Default On our way

EOI selected 23 April (175pts incl job offer), blue stickers arrived 13 June - I have to say that I have been very impressed with the immigration people in London. Furniture goes 30th June and we leave UK on 10th July to start job in Timaru.

House in UK still not sold and given doom and gloom in papers not likely to in near future. This may cause a problem down the road but that is the chance we are having to take!

Question - can I apply for an IRD number before I arrive in NZ or do I have to do that as soon as I arrive? I want to avoid going on emergency tax code if I can.

Still convinced that there are lots of things that I should have done by now but haven't.

Getting very excited now!

Hi Whale,

Great to see things are still moving along for you (apart from the house, that is ).

Bunstar posted a link on this old thread (last post) and she reckons you can't now apply from outside NZ. I thought you were able to at one time so maybe it's changed now. Perhaps someone can confirm or deny as the website doesn't seem to mention applying from overseas?

Congrats, Whale. That was a quick turnaround. Best of luck with the move and house sale.

Thanks for the link on IRD - that was very useful. Looks like as long as you are quick getting IRD when you arrive then you should be OK.

Interesting comments on Kiwisaver as well. I am still trying to figure out what is best to do with pensions - any good links for this?

We got our IRD numbers recently and it took just over a week to arrive. We were already in NZ though so not so sure about doing it overseas.. I would guess if you had an address of someone else over here or you already had the address of where you are staying once you arrive you could send off for the IRD number and have it delivered for when you get here???

I have just looked at he IRD website and I am a little confused. As I will be working almost straight away I can apply for one as I have a job offer but how will OH apply? He will be looking for part-time work once we are settled. The documents you need - apart from ID - are job offers or student details. I also read somewhere that to get working family tax credits (which PR holders are entitled to) all the kids need IRD numbers too. Can anyone shed any light on this? Or am I being just plain thick??

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I've printed off all the forms for the IRD numbers and the working families tax credits, just had a quick look through them and as far as I can tell, we fill them all in and once in New Zealand can send off the IRD form together with the working families tax credits form, and it looks like the only ID you need is your current passport.

Thanks - I will probably do that. First (or second) thing to do will definitely be the IRD offices - or near equivalent.
