Thanks for the wealth of info

I suppose we could do it that way.. but like you say it is a risk. Also we have 2 kids, so they would not be allowed to go to school until we got our PR sorted out right?

I guess if you are determined though, and have enough cash to keep you going for 6 months, then that is fine. I would hope that at least one of us would get a job offer within 3 months, even if its not the perfect one. Plus there are some fairly cheap rental properties all over which would suit us until we got settled.

OH last question - have you heard of anyone either being forced to come back to their original country or had to come back as they didnt get a job?

Just curious!! haha

But, thanks a million guys, will defo think about doing it this way.

How old are your kids? W ehave done it with 2 kids but they aren't school age just yet- the eldest will be due to start in august providing we have visas through by then.

Do you have an area in mind or just go where the work is?Some people do go back home cos things don't work out as planned but if you are open minded and adaptable then all should be OK. And i think IT is a pretty 'safe' carreer as it is in demand here- like you said- even if you take a job that isn't exactly what you wnat to get your foot in the door so to speak- you can search for other jobs once you got vias sorted etc.

Hi ebianca,

My girls are now 7 and 9. So they are both at school. They are good kids and do well at school, so i suppose a month or so away from school wouldnt do too much damage to their education.

We were looking at wellington as most of the IT jobs are there. I have been looking at houses in Paraparaumu which is a wee bit outside the centre of wellingtom , but the houses there are nice

We are also looking at Christchurch and Auckland, and their surrounding areas. I really liked the look of Tauranga, but due to the types of jobs we have i think we would struggle a little to find work.

Yeah, i really would take ANY job in any area, like you say, i think we have to go wherever we find work, and take it from there.

So where in wellington are you??

If you have any long term visa/permit such as a WP while you're waiting for your PR to come through, you can still put your kids into school with Student Visas which can be applied for at the same time.

Thx Motherbear....

The plot thickens!!!! How come it is so hard to find this info on the immigration site? There are never any clear cut answers!!!!

So basically, if we got work, once we got our work permits the kids would be able to go to school? Cool, well thats not so worrying then! haha

Cheers

Hi Caz

Yes we are in Wellington- been here almost 8 weeks and have just moved into a rental in Camborne/Plimmerton area (probabaly half way between Param and Welli)

Paraparaumu looks lovely and property is a bit cheaper out there as the Kiwis don't like to commute so far- there are a couple of newer members on here living out that way who could give you better infor on the area.

Wellington does seem the better place for IT (what part of IT?) and seems to be plenty of jobs floating around at the moment. If you want to contatc any recruitment agencies when you arrive- Beyond Reruitment have been very helpful with my OH and Duncan and Ryan are also suppposed to be pretty good.

Thx Beth

My hubby is currently a Network admin, but he could get a job in various IT jobs and also web admin. I will probably try to get something in PA or admin, but his job is the main one, so i can wait til i get there before i really start looking properly.

We have contacted a few recruitment agencies from here and they have asked when we plan to come over and what our travel arrangements are! Hmm but we've not made any yet haha

A few did say that they were interested and that they would keep in touch, so i guess thats promising! However, they could just be saying that, and when u get there they have nothing to offer you!! You know what they can be like!

So how do you find wellington so far? Any major gripes?

CAZ

I am in Paraparam. It is about an hour from wellington on a good day. You can take the train down. The drive will eat you up gas wise and then there is parking. Many people here take the train down to the city. It is not so bad.

Lifestyle is the big thing here. You are out of the big city up here and the weather is nicer. Lots of shopping and everything else so you really don't need to go in to the city very much.

Petrol isn't cheap and will only go up so keep that in mind.

Cheers,

Cliff

Thanks

@Cliff - We have looked into the train timetables for the line that runs from paraparaumu to wellington and tbh it seems the best option to the city.

Hubby has found a few companies in Upper Hut also, that could be potential work places. Not sure how long it would take to get there from paraparaumu.

I think petrol is expensive everywhere now... there is no getting away from it. I guess you just have to work that in to the financial calculations haha
And also i like the idea of living outside the city, really so that the kids can run around a bit more.

@ Meadow - Cool! We have looked at christchurch also and there are some nice areas outside the city with big houses and reasonable prices.

I am not sure what the IT job market is like in C'church tho? Any idea?

I guess i would find an admin job anywhere quite quickly, but its the OH i'm worried about!

So i guess it is very different to Glasgow? And i guess you wanted to move there for similar reasons we do haha

Thanks a million guys, this is really helping us on our way. Need to start the preparations now. I guess it takes a while tho
