Each year, 10,000 people emigrate from Britain to New Zealand, lured by its small-town charm, low crime and conservative values. But does the country live up to its billing? New arrival Peter Foster reports from South Island

As the Air New Zealand turboprop came puttering into land at the rather grandly titled Nelson Airport (it's really more "field" than "port"), I found myself squeezing my wife's hand.

It wasn't the bumpy landing that caused me to reach across and grip her like a maniac, but a boyish excitement. Since getting married four years ago, we'd talked more or less idly about this moment. Now, as the ground raced up to meet us, a once-crazy idea was turning into a reality. We were coming to live in New Zealand.

great read- I know that feeling of when you land too- i had a few tears in my eyes when we first landed in Auckland- we had actually made it to NZ after all this time of talking about it.
