Question Help / Advice Needed

Hi there,

Just wondered whether anyone can help?
It is looking like I may have to fly out to NZ before my OH as my employer needs me to start work earlier than him and the house sale hasn't gone through yet!!
If I don't I may lose the offer of employment...........
Does anyone know whether we all have to arrive together to activate the PR?
My OH is the principal applicant.
Am I able to arrive before him & start work???
Thanks
Mel.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to travel together as this same situation arises with many other people where one family member has to travel ahead of the others to start work or to find a place to live etc. You should both have your own blue stickers in your passports, so they will be activated when each of you arrives in NZ, whether separately or together. The only thing is that your OH would need to get to NZ to activate his PR within 12 months but I'd certainly hope that finalising your house sale wouldn't take that long.

Thumbs down Help / Advice Needed - Update

For info - if anyone else ends up in the same situation in the future.

I contacted our VO today and was told that I cannot travel ahead of my OH.
As he is the Principal Applicant we either have to all travel together or he can travel first to activate the visa and I can follow on..................
Mel.

Oh right, so that's how it works. Thanks for that info Mel. I know of a lot of people who have gone on ahead to start work, but didn't realise it could only be the principal applicant. In the manual they seem to gloss over what comes in between getting PR and settling in NZ. What a bummer! You'd think they'd be only too happy to get you there and into your job.

Perhaps you could still go but apply for a WP to tide you over until things are sorted? That would give you some independence from your OH. Don't know how you'd overcome the 'coming into NZ together' thing though.

Unhappy

Apparently If I decided to travel ahead of my OH I could apply for a Work Permit............(more costs)................ to tide me over.............then when he arrives and activates the Permanent Residency Visa my WP will become null and void!!!
Seems all messy and costly to me......................
Lets just hope my employer will wait a little longer for me.............
