    Hi NZGirl

I don't know if this site will be any help to you. It's for learning Maori but gives an idea of pronunciation of the words so you should be able to pick up some tips.

Congrats on landing safely in NZ. Hope it all goes well for you from now on.

All I can remember is that each syllable has equal emphasis, and letters are mostly pronounced in a straightforward way. "Wh" is the exception, pronounced "f" or "wh", depending on the place. When I am in doubt, I cover both bases by pronouncing it as "fwh".

'ng' is pronounced like si..ng or rin..ng. I've heard Tauranga pronounced as Toronga. It's quite a soft sound. Before I received enlightenment, I used to say Toran-gah.

We were previously discussing pronounciation here and here .

TAURANGA...tow sound from "towel" so say towel but minus the "el" but keep the same song, DO NOT SAY TOW..as in PULL(very wrong) , then rang is said "wrong" the the last bit "a" is said "ah".... tow-wrong-ah. Mt Maunganui... Mount.. Mong-nah-new-ee pretty much :D:D
