More of a sad techy question really. Can anyone recommend any where for getting a cheap (or free) .co.nz domain name?

Thanks Taffy, thought you would be the man to ask. Should have just mailed you direct. I use 1to1 here but they don't cover the .nz domains.

Go Daddy does them as well.

I've used them for several years and they are very easy and reliable. They also have an option for making your registration 'private' so those who search the ICANN database won't have access to your phone number and address.

I just wonder about registering for a .co.nz web address. There may be some verification process for ensuring that you are eligible. I once registered a .us web address and had to verify that I actually lived in the United States. Just one thing to consider.

You don't have to do any kind of verification for .nz domain names, anyone in the world can register them. What you can't do though, is use privacy protection. One of the .nz rules says your real details must be displayed in the whois. With spam on the up and up though, this may well be reviewed at some stage.

Hmm ... Are proxies out too, then? That's how GoDaddy does it. When making your domain private, you contract out to a shell company that holds the domain for you. If you look up my domain, you are directed to GoDaddy's database, which in turn lists this:

    Registrant:
    Domains by Proxy, Inc.

Would that be prohibited under NZ rules? If so, I'd go for a regular .com or .net address. I've got enough personal information on my website that I wouldn't want to have my phone number and address out there too. (I had a mildly frightening experience after writing an anti-anti-homosexual letter to the editor.)

The thing with NZ domains is whoever is shown as the registrant is the legal owner of the domain, so if the 'privacy' company decided to keep your domain, there would be nothing you could do about it.

You are, of course, entitled to put a PO Box address in, and to help against spam I use a specific email address to register domains which only allows emails from the registrar.

But, if you have to put in a phone number, you might as well put your physical address--at least in the US anyway. If you google a US phone number, chances are good that you'll get a physical address. If not, it really takes only a little more hunting to get it.

Just who exactly are you trying to hide from, KH? Are you sure the FBI isn't after you or something?! You can put a mobile number in, PAYG mobiles aren't traceable to anyone.

    I'll never tell!

Actually, since I put so many pictures of my kids up, I don't want any pervs to get ideas. Where I used to live wasn't really much of a secret, since my house was about 200 yards from the school where I taught and my name was right there on our mailbox.
