The fall didn't last long then.

NZ dollar hits near six-week high
9:18AM Friday September 21, 2007

The New Zealand dollar hit a near six-week high above US74.50c early today, as the greenback tumbled.

The US dollar reached a record low against the euro and reached parity with the Canadian currency for the first time in 31 years on expectations of more cuts in US interest rates after this week's sharp reduction.

Bank of New Zealand currency strategist Danica Hampton said the NZ dollar had rallied sharply, but then eased as commercial accounts came to the market.

By 8.30am today the kiwi was buying US73.64c, little different to the US73.55c it was buying at 5pm yesterday.

Darn it! We missed the window.

Kiwi rollercoaster hits 8-week high
5:00AM Tuesday October 02, 2007
By Adam Bennett

The New Zealand dollar is soaring again, pushing through the US76c barrier yesterday on strong local data and a weakening greenback.

The kiwi closed on an eight-week high of US76.54c and the trade weighted index reached 71.66, its highest finish since August 12.

With the struggling US dollar providing a substantial tailwind, Friday's stronger than expected local gross domestic product number has given the kiwi a fresh boost and it has now gained more than a cent against the US dollar since the data was released.

After falling US15c in little more than three weeks to a low of US66.70c during the depths of the sub-prime crisis, some analysts are not ruling out a move by the kiwi above US80c.

Is it heading the right way again? Dare we hope?

Kiwi on downward trend
New 5:40PM Wednesday October 31, 2007

The New Zealand dollar remained on a gentle downward trend.

It eased overnight to US76.58c from US76.88c yesterday but was stationary during the day in moribund trading. It has fallen from US77.40c at the start of the week.

Against the Australian dollar, the kiwi was again around seven-week lows, buying A83.02c at the close, after a small bounce through much of the local trading day yesterday.

A new survey showed business confidence rebounded this month to - 13 per cent from - 27 per cent last month but yesterday's poor September building permits data would weight on the kiwi, ANZ said.

Continued tests of support were under way for the kiwi against the Australian dollar and it looked to be a matter of time before an attempt below A83c took place, ANZ said.

According to this morning's news, it is back up over $.77 US. I'm no economist, but I think it is in part due to the Federal Reserve cutting its short-term rates by 1/4% to 4.5%.

Frankly, it's making me rather ill. If anything sends me back to the US, it will be this. I thought we'd be able to ride out the exchange rate, but that money I have sitting in my US bank keeps looking like less and less of a down payment on a house I already can't afford.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet and keeping my focus long-term, but it's frustrating as hell.

At least WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Okay, that made me feel a bit better.

Okay ... Here's cognitive dissonance for you. Converting 1 USD to NZD makes me feel a little bit bad. Converting 50,000 USD to NZD makes me feel a lot worse. It's the same rate, but something about that big number getting quite as big makes me want to puke.

Default You take the chances

Difficult is the NZ$ and its yoyo currency rates.
I have been watching it go up and down the past two years and buying when best.
But, you also have to look at the property prices increasing and the bigger saving rates .
I guess its a tough call knowing when and go for it but if you want to live in NZ then you accept it and bite the bullet.
Mind you I looking to wait to see if I can swap some more soon!

Default It's down

Currency: NZ dollar falls below US75c
9:30AM Tuesday November 13, 2007

The New Zealand dollar fell below US75c today as investors fled risk, and it has now fallen 3.6 per cent since Friday's close.

At 8am it was buying US74.84c compared with yesterday's close of US75.43c and US77.68c on Friday.

The fall against the yen has been even more severe -- down 5.8 per cent from Friday. It is now buying 82.32 compared with 83.03 yesterday and 87.40 on Friday.

The Australian dollar was hit even harder. It was down to US88.23c from US89.50c yesterday. It plummeted around 3 US cents in the New York session. The kiwi cross rate rose to A84.80c from A84.29c.

ANZ bank said in its briefing note to clients today that market indigestion delivered a bad case of the runs yesterday and the rout continued overnight.

It said there was large scale carry trade exiting as risk aversion dominated.
