Default UK Driving License
Hey yall,

I have a full uk driving license, can I use it in NZ?

I guess I can use it for a while but Im actually moving there to stay forever so do I have to take a NZ driving test at some point or can I just apply for a new license??

I read in the news somewhere that you dont actually need motor insurance too is that true? I head they were thinking about making 3rd party mandatory which implys that its not currently.

Hi Mentiad,

You can use your UK license for up to 12 months after entering NZ, then you have to sit a sort of written test to get your NZ one. I believe it's a bit like a scratch card where you scrape off the answer you think is correct.

Insurance isn't compulsory at the moment, but, as you say (and as I posted in a news article in the What's in the news? category, for anyone who wants to read about it), they are thinking of bringing it in. Insurance in NZ isn't as expensive as it is in the UK, so it's worth having just to protect yourself.

As for the driving test, have a few trial runs and see how you get on.

Insurance is pretty cheep here.

Also if you have more than one type of license eg car and bike, then you will have to sit (and pay) for two theory tests.

Do you need a NZ licence in order to get insurance or can you get insurance (for the first 12 months) on a UK driving licence???

You can get insurance, but some companies will charge you a premium for being a 'higher risk'.

Question
While we are on the subject of driving licenses.

If you have points on your UK license (not me the OH) do they get carried over onto your NZ one or do you get a clean break? They will be over 3years old anyway but thought I would ask.

Clean break! Not much is carried over from the UK. You lose your license points, credit history, sanity etc. If you're lucky though, you can carry over your no claims bonus for your car insurance!

We tried to carry over our bike insurance, which was with the same company , they gave us a quote based on the no claims discount, then they rang to say we couldn't have the no claims discount after investigation, however the premium was the same as with the discount - go figure!
