Fortunately, flying doesn't bother me...

However, Shellbda is not a big fan... If you continue with this thread I'm going to have to knock her out completely to get her to NZ...mildly drugged is going to be amusing enough...

I would have thought the Bermuda Rum would have taken care of any nerves!

I wish...she won't touch the stuff really...it'll have to be drugs... the legal sort you understand...

We leave the Black Rum for the crazy kiwis! Every November we have the World Rugby Classic here in Bermuda and the Classic AB's have been coming here for twenty years...they are very messy on the Black Rum...but very funny...

ShellBda can rest assured of what I heard (hope it is right!). Qantas pride themselves of having never crashed a plane.

With other airlines, just ask for the extra allowance in advance and you are likely to get it, they mark your tickets in their system with the extra allowance. We said we were emigrating (singapore airlines) they gave us and extra 10kg each, when we got to the gate, we found they had actually given us an extra 20kg each

I had read comments from quite a few people about the food being a bit strange
Food on singapore airlines is brilliant, the best I have had on any flight and I have lf flown a lot on a variety of airlines. You are offered two meat/fish choices for each meal. One is British like and one more Singaporean. Beakfast is continental style - bread roll, cheese, jam, yoghurt etc. Snacks are sandwiches apples, peanuts etc. Nothing wierd about the food really. You can choose rice noodles (we did and preferred the singapore style food) for breakfast, but you don't have to. There is also the vegetarian option if you ask in advance, I didn't taste it, but it looked good.
If I remember correctly they also had other snacks for the young children and they gave them stuff to keep them occupied - I think paper pens, puzzle books etc - not sure not having children ourselves.

We flew with Air NZ when we emigrated and we were more than happy with them The main reason that we flew with them is because they gave us a much larger luggage allowance. This was important to us because we have 2 young daughters, our youngest was only 5 months old when we came, and children - especially babies - seem to require so much stuff!!!

Before we booked our tickets, we phoned both Singapore and Malaysian Airlines to see if they would give us a larger luggage allowance as we were emigrating. Both companies told us that they wouldn't I have been told that if you tell the person at the check-in desk that you are emigrating, they will increase your allowance - but we just didn't want to risk being told on the day that we travelled that we had too much luggage! I also didn't want to have to pay for excess baggage!

We were able to take our daughters fold down buggy on board with Air NZ, which was a great help when we had the 2 hour stopover in LA. The skycot that they provided for the baby was bigger and more comfortable than the one provided by Virgin Airways when we flew to Orlando earlier that year - which meant that she slept for longer Our 6 year old also found loads of stuff to amuse herself with on their kids entertainment channels - so she was quieter for longer

My mum is hoping to come and live in NZ too, as soon as we have been here long enough to sponsor her. She flew with Singapore Airlines when she visited us earlier this year and said that she would recommend them to anyone

ShellBda - My mum was terrified of flying before she came out to see us, and she had to do the 26 hour flight all on her own. So she bought herself a book, 2 weeks before she travelled, called "The Easy Way To: Enjoy Flying" by Allen Carr. This book seems to have completely cured her fear of flying! When we picked her up from Auckland Airport I was convinced she would be in a right state, but she was relaxed, calm and happy. All this after a 26 hour flight - bloody awesome I reckon

Sorry for the really long post everyone - but as you can see I tend to ramble!

It's funny how so many people seem to fear the flight to NZ but, in hindsight, it is never as bad. My mum and sister came to visit us earlier in the year from the UK and were not looking forward to the flight. However, when we picked them up from Auckland, they too were calm, well rested and happy. Sure, they were glad to be off the plane on terra firma, but I don't think it was as bad as they anticipated. It's all in the mind-preparation before you leave - if you watch the clock every 5 mins, it will take forever, but if you come prepared with a few books and things to keep you occupied, and treat the plane trip as part of your holiday (I mean who wouldn't like to be waited on hand and foot for over 24 hours, no cleaning, meals brought to you, all the TV you can watch, complete relaxation.... ), it's not that bad, especially when you are travelling with a good airline.

And don't apologise for long posts Laura - we love 'em!

My mum doesnt mind flying itself (she goes on about 3 holidays a year normally) but is scared of flying by herself to the point of saying she wont come and visit us in NZ unless she has someone to come with her on the flight there and back Makes me mad as she is upset that she wont see us for a long time and making us feel bad but she wont make the effort to try and fly by herself which would mean she could come out and stay as long as she liked, whenever she liked without relying on trying to find someone else to come over.

Perhaps I should buy her that book you mentioned Laura
