Poll says no need to change NZ flag

A new poll has come out against holding a referendum on changing New Zealand's flag.

The flag has been a hot topic in recent days after a request by Ata Tino Toa to Transit last month, seeking to fly the distinctive red black and white tino rangatiratanga flag from Auckland Harbour Bridge, was rejected.

A TV3 poll tonight recorded 43 per cent support for a referendum with 52 percent rejecting the idea.

A campaign led by a group of people from business, sports and the arts - NZFlag.com - in 2005 tried to collect 270,000 signatures to force a referendum on changing the flag.

It pulled the plug that July, ahead of an October deadline, when it became clear it would not reach the target.
