Default Air NZ price cuts?

Air NZ prices due for cuts
12:05PM Sunday January 14, 2007
By Chris Daniels

The soaring fortunes of our majority Govern-ment-owned national carrier Air NZ will be closely watched over the next few weeks, as pressure builds on the airline to cut ticket charges in line with falling world oil prices.

While it was knocked back last year in its attempt to get regulatory approval for an anti-competitive alliance with rival Qantas, things have generally been looking up for the airline, which was saved from ruin by a billion dollar Government bail-out just six years ago.

The continued strength of the kiwi dollar helps the airline, which has to pay for new aircraft, and its massive fuel bill, in US dollars. But a high dollar also makes New Zealand a more expensive destination for tourists. Revenue received from those tourists buying their tickets in overseas currency also falls.

Air New Zealand sticks to its higher fares

Air New Zealand is refusing to lower its airfares despite a fall in fuel prices - even after its main rival yesterday cut surcharges on transtasman and domestic flights.

Qantas said it would reduce its fuel surcharges on all domestic flights and some international flights by A$5 ($5.71) from next Tuesday.

The levy on flights from Australia to Asia, the Pacific and Honolulu would be cut to A$100.

Australian fares to New Zealand would also be reduced by A$5.

All Qantas Australian and New Zealand domestic flight surcharges come down to A$26.

Air NZ unveils some big fare cuts
NZPA | Friday, 19 January 2007

New Zealand has announced large cuts to its domestic fares.

The airline said today that domestic pricing would drop by up to 26 percent from January 24 for travel from February 24.

The cheapest one-way fares between Auckland and Wellington will drop from $115 to $89 and between Christchurch and Wellington from $93 to $79.

Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe says today's announcement was expected to generate demand for travel on the Air New Zealand domestic network.

"We are committed to growing our business and we can only achieve that by stimulating demand."
