Default Another Weather Report from Welly

Hello. James Carman Parsons reporting for MovetoNZ News, from Wellington.

We are in the worst winter in 30 years here in Wellington. And let me tell you......I'm not sure what these Kiwis are talking about honestly. It's not that bad.

Last week I gave a weather report of the preceding 7 days (13th to 20th of July). 3 of those days were nice and sunny. Not too shabby for the worst winter in 30 years right?

So what did this past week hold for us? Well, it was pretty much the same every day.

Now, those from England are thinking that probably means overcast and drizzly......Well, enough with the suspense. Here is the past week:

22nd to 28th July (all measurements are in metric):
Saturday: Sunny. High of 11. Avg wind 25 kmh.
Sunday Sunny. High of 13. Avg wind 17 kmh.
Monday:Sunny. High of 14. Avg wind 16 kmh.
Tuesday: Sunny. High of 12. Avg wind 11 kmh.
Wednesday: Sunny. High of 12. Avg wind 16 kmh.
Thursday: Sunny. High of 11. Avg wind 16.
Friday: Sunny. High of 13. Avg wind 9

The worst day of the week in the middle of the worst winter in 30 years?:
Saturday: Sunny. High of 11. Avg wind 25 kmh.

I could easily believe I'm in the middle of the Florida winter (by far my favourite time of year back home)....If it weren't for the mountains around, the temp never getting up to 22, and all these people with funny accents. ? :-/

Note: Yes, I left out last Friday. The high was 8. There was hail in the morning. And the average wind speed was 46 kmh. But the next week was so nice, I decided to 'start' the week at Saturday, and forget all about Friday. ? [smiley=icon_twisted.gif]

I have noticed too that when you get a couple of 'bad' days every one apologises about the weather. OK The wind does whip up the rain so that it moves horizonally before hitting the ground.

Sunny days in winter and the respectable temperatures are great.

Yeah, it's great! I've had that happen to me a few times as well. [smiley=icon_mrgreen.gif]

It's funny with the rain, sometimes it looks ferocious when you are looking outside.....but when you are in the rain, it's not all that bad. Maybe all the wind makes the rain drops halve in size or something like that [smiley=icon_eek.gif]

Hi,

This is my first post but I felt compelled to... [smiley=icon_confused.gif]

We live in Wellington too and have been here since Feb. Don't know where in Welly you are James because I think the weather here is shocking!! I've never experienced such prolonged and heavy rain in my life and actually find it really depressing. [smiley=icon_redface.gif]

Anyway, hello to all and nice to 'meet'you

Ha Ha! Sorry...I had to laugh - you have to understand. Coming from James, a Floridian (like myself), we are used to the heavy rains (and winds) that are brought by the hurricanes every year......one of which (Chris) may be hitting us over the weekend, as I 'speak'.

?Lou,

Welcome aboard! ?Good to have you with us.

Yes, I?ve heard that lower NI has been having atrocious weather this winter, but you have to understand that James carries his own sunshine with him wherever he goes. ?And what do they say about the sun always shining on the righteous??

?

Right, that should get me on James' Christmas card mailing list this year. ?

Hello Lou,

Welcome welcome...

That is what makes Welly unique and interesting at the same time. Just ride it out and soon you will get used to it and be able to welcome summer with wide open embrace.

Stay positive. Don't let the environment control your feelings. (You can choose between [smiley=icon_frown.gif] or [smiley=icon_biggrin.gif] )

Something to look forward to.......

Warmer, milder spring forecast
04 August 2006

A warmer-than-average and less windy spring is predicted by weather forecasters.

Though spring is typically the windiest season, this year it may have fewer windy days and less windy conditions than normal, the National Institute of Atmospheric and Water Research says.

The next three months may also bring average or above-average temperatures throughout New Zealand.

The months of August through to October are expected to bring normal rainfall. The exceptions could be the north and west of the South Island, where rainfall could be below normal, and the north and east of the North Island, where it could be above normal.
