Default Another Weather Report from Welly

Hi,

This is my first post but I felt compelled to... [smiley=icon_confused.gif]

We live in Wellington too and have been here since Feb. Don't know where in Welly you are James because I think the weather here is shocking!! I've never experienced such prolonged and heavy rain in my life and actually find it really depressing. [smiley=icon_redface.gif]

Anyway, hello to all and nice to 'meet'you

Hi Lou, nice to meet you as well.

Well, the week that this report was done it was great. But the one before that was quite shocking.

Florida - As Pianist alluded too I am from Florida. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I never went through a hurricane. Freak statistics really. After leaving FL for NZ in 2004, THREE hurricanes went through Orlando within 12 weeks.

However, what I am used to are afternoon thunderstorms, nearly every day in the summer. Orlando is only about 100km from Tampa, the Thunderstorm Capital of the World.

Overall I've seen/heard 10 thunderstorms in 2 years of being in NZ. TEN! I can see that many in 2 weeks in Orlando. (yes, I keep track. I miss them....I also keep track of how many people I see walking around barefoot. Saw 2 of em this past Saturday (and got their pictures)).

When it rains hard in NZ, the longest I've seen it go on is 20 minutes. But most of the time the "hard" stuff lasts about a minute.

I may come from summers of 34 degree heat and winters of 22 degree 'chill', but I like the weather better in NZ. (oh, that's 94 F and 72 F for the Americans [smiley=icon_wink.gif] )......Highs of 26 in the summer, and highs of 10/14 in the winter. (80F and 50/58F) And no spontaneous thunderstorms to drive through. [smiley=icon_mrgreen.gif]

Thanks MB! [smiley=icon_biggrin.gif]

Wikipedia is trying to tell me that Orlando is commonly referred to as the Lightning Capital of the World.....do they not know Tampa exists? It's not like it's a small city, more people live there than in Orlando.

After some sluething here are the average annual rainfall amounts:

Orlando: 128 cm
Wellington: 125 cm

Very very close. However I'd like to point out, that in Orlando, "when it rains it pours".

However Wellington has it's own "weather advantage" (if you can call it that)......When it's windy, it's howling.

Orlando: 13kmh
Wellington: 22kmh

(hmm, that's a lot closer than I thought it was. Of course, thunderstorms almost every day in the summer can stir make for a decent average wind)
