Default Campervan vs 4x4
we hired toyota hiace, but not a 4wd and we had no problems with it on the hills, but then there were only two of us in it.

Yeah the Hiace will be ok, you don't need 4 x 4 just sensible sized engine. Anything less that 15 years old will be fine I'm sure.
