Default Me going to find a job - wish me luck!

Hi pulsarblu,

Sorry to hear that your trip wasn't entirely successful, but I'm sure you will have better luck when time is on your side! You've taken a step in the right direction anyway and it sounds like you did enjoy your time in Welly. Won't be long before you're back here and you can job-hunt at your leisure, so enjoy the rest of your time in Singapore. Thanks for checking in with us and keep in touch :icon_biggrin:

The best job will be waiting for you when you arrive in NZ in August, Pulsarblu. [smiley=023.gif]

At least you have made a lot of friends and contacts who will pave the way for you when you settle in Wellington. You will know your way around and know where to find most things.

Although you didn?t get a job this time around, the trip seems to have been very worthwhile nevertheless, so it was a good experience.

We?ll keep our fingers crossed for you next time around.

I'll second that Pulsarblu. I'm sure something will turn up when you return. [smiley=icon_biggrin.gif]

I'm sure a few of us on here would also be interested to hear how you found Wellington, especially me as Welly is probably where I'll end up. ;)

Hi Pulsarblu...

Since I became a forum member I'm following this topic as a 'Tv Serial'...

I'm sorry you didn't make it, but pleased you got that experience as well.

I do consider time as an fondamental point looking for a job, especially if you're looking for the best one!

Good luck for the next step... KEEP IT REAL [smiley=023.gif]

Wellington is a compact city that you can walk to most places. The hills are a 'bit' steep at some sections but once you build up huge thigh muscles you will be fine...

The winds are fierce and I now truely appreciate the term Windy Welly. It is not nice sometimes to walk in the wind especially in Winter but I am sure like the hills, you will get used to it soon.

Majority of the business are concentrated in the CBD area namely Lambton Quay, Customhouse Quay, Willis street and The Terrace. I am surprised that even in the CBD area, it is not as crowded as some other cities like Singapore for example. There are less cars, people and activities during the peak hours and if it is crowded, it only last for couple of hours during the peak. Overall, walking is much easier for me as I do not have to constantly dodge people like in Singapore.

I did not visit all the attractions in Wellington and being budget minded, I only visited Te Papa which is free. I love Te Papa, locals here call this musuem 'Our Place'. I learned a lot about the natural history and makeup of New Zealand. I also learned a lot about the Moari culture which can be very useful when integrating quickly into the society here. Since Te Papa is situated along the beautiful harbour, I also spent many hours along there too just relaxing and gazing into the distant hills (not sure the name though) and other cities in Greater Wellington region.

There are more cafes in Wellington for per person than New York as I was told. I think this is true and I have seen and visited many many cafes in Wellington. One particular one is called Tamarillo right opposite the City Council office. They served excellent cuppocino, latte, teas, chai latte and lots of good snacks. Most importantly, the owner and cafe manager are great person to talk to. This is what I believe what will determine the success of the cafe in Wellington - the character.

Another good place to spent time while looking for a job (like me..) is at the Wellington City Library, they have excellent books and other media that you can browse. I am surprised that they also have old photos of Wellington which is a joy to me as I am into photography. I spent one two hours there each time.

As for food, I usually head to the BNZ (Bank of New Zealand) food court for lunch and usually that is my other meal of the day. I had breakfast provided at the hostel (Corn flakes, cereals and milk and toast). The food portion are sufficient for me. I usually spend $10 each time. Sometime I will meet up with my friends and head to the Hong Kong restaurant along Kent Terrace. The restaurant is called HK BBQ and Tea. They serve good authentic HK chinese food and the portions are HUGE. Prices are reasonable.

During the last day there, I took a coach from the railway station to Auckland. The railway station is a nice grand building, it is beautiful but only worth a visit if you are taking a train or coach. Similarly the bee hive, which is the government offices is a dull grey building very near to the railway station.

Not to mention that the art culture here. I feel that people here appreciate art more and since I also like art especially painting and photography, I can see lots of opportunities for artist and art fans alike.

If you are cyclist here in Wellington, generally it is safe to cycle/commute to errands or work but just need to be careful on the road and plan your route before. Also if you can incorporate your route along the harbour (nice wide walkway and cycleway - no car traffic), it will be the best. Oh, remember to wear a helmet at all times, turn on blicker lights in the back and front during night and dull days.

I did not have a chance to explore further out of the city so I apologised that I cannot provide more details.

In short, I like the city. The people, the hills, the winds, enviornment, architecture, cafes, art, traffic conditions and harbour.

I hope this pretty much cover most of my experience. Let me know if you have any questions and I can provide answers.

Looks like Wellie's a good choice.

Wellingtonians pocket highest wages
3.00pm Tuesday May 23, 2006

Wages in Wellington are the highest in New Zealand, according to information released by Statistics New Zealand.

Figures to Mach 2005 show Wellingtonians' quarterly earnings were $11,070 - $40 ahead of Aucklanders.

The national average was $9,830.

However, Northland had the biggest percentage increase in earnings at 5.2 per cent, followed by Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast, at 4.8 per cent.

The growth in those regions - along with Manawatu-Wanganui at 4.5 per cent - was attributed to climbing average earnings in the manufacturing industry.

Job growth for the year ending March 2005 was the fastest in Waikato, up 4.4 per cent, just head of Bay of Plenty.

Statistics new Zealand attributed Waikato's growth to increases in the property and business services industry.

Default Me going to find a job - wish me luck!

Hello Everyone.

Here is Pulsarblu talking about his latest adventure! So here it goes...

I have tendered my resignation on 10 Aug and my last day with the current co. will be on 25 Aug since I have some vacation leave to clear. My previous boss fought my case to allowmy transfer to NZ office but however there were some issues that even he cannot handle. Therefore the final decision was that either I have to stay with the current co. and continue working from where I am based now or tender my resignation. I of course choose the latter to continue chasing my dream.

I will depart Singapore on the 10 Sep and arrive in Auckland on the same day and then Wellington on 11 Sep. When I arrive I will keep everyone updated of my happenings so I guess it will be like another TV serial!

Maybe I just talk about my travel plan and where I intend to stay when I arrive. I am flying into Auckland on Singapore air on board SQ281 arriving Auckland late at night. I will stay over at the hotel near the Sky Tower so I can take the early coach to Wellington the next day. I find this mode of transport cheaper than flying. I know some may say NO Way..., but I thought I paid less (NZD$79) well slightly less and I get to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of NI. It is a good deal isn't it?? haha..

Anyway when I arrive in Wellington, I will probably stay at a affordable motel or B&B for a couple of days before finding a room to rent. Wifey will not come over that soon so I am going to miss her a lot. However my rationale is that I will 'open' up the path for her so when she arrive, she need not to bang her head so many times...if you know what I mean..

After settling in I will start looking for job. I already scheduled a meeting with QIDR, a recruitment agency to touch base and get up to speed to help me search for a job. MY target is to get a job within one month and I am sure I can do it!

More postings on my adventure in Welly until I arrive, in the meantime I will not go offline and you will still see me posting here and there.

Take care folks...
