Default Domestic airfare - Auckland to Wellington

Man....the prices of airfares has risen so much. I remember it was $85 one way, now it has risen to $135 to $195 for Qantas and pretty much the same for Air NZ...!!! ARRGhhh..

Does any know better way to travel from Auckland to Wellington. I thought of coaches (can be quite long but cheaper...$80 one way with YHA discount), rail is also expensive and not too practical... How about renting a car and drive all the way...but with the price increase for petrol, maybe it is not a good idea.. However, price of EVERYTHING increases with petrol price increase..so left without much choice!! :icon_sad:

The news is that Air New Zealand prices will rise by 10% at the beginning of next month, and no doubt will do the same with the other airlines. :icon_sad:

What mode of transport you choose is dependent of what time you have, and how tired you may be when you arrive. Remember that hiring a car is not just the hire price to be paid out but a hefty insurance premium on top, especially if you want windscreen protection too.

We considered driving from Aucks to Welly when we were last there, but in addition to car rental, fuel, and time, there was lodging if we didn't drive straight through. At the time, the round tip flight was about $200 (US?NZ?), and we figured it was worth it then. I'm not so sure we'd do the same now, if air fares are that much higher, and we had the time.

We were in a similar position a couple of years back. Needed to get from Nelson to Auckland and the flight would have been cheaper by about $150 than going by hire car, ferry, train journey and taxi to airport. It was only because my son had chickenpox (not allowed on planes) that we took the latter option.
