Default Free PhD in NZ?

I've been interviewing various people from NZ to get some inside scoop and one former international NZ student told me she received notice that NZ is offering free PhD education program for international students. Does anyone here know anything about this?

It sounds too good to be true. But if it's not, I can be persuaded to get an advanced degree!

Not sure about that. But i heard somewhere, not NZ, that some uni offers PHDs to very good grades postgrad students (although not free, but with scholarships). They do that to improve the reputation of the universities.

I work at a University and they never seem able to find enough PhD students to take all the available scholarships. It's always worth applying....

Unlike the degree courses (which have higher fees for foreign students), international PhD students pay the same fees as domestic students.

many uni's (in the UK, so maybe also in other countries) will accept students onto a PhD if they have a good first degree mark.

some master's (again in the UK, etc) will accept students without a first degree if they can demonstrate knowledge of the subject, ie experience working in it, or accreditation of prior learning, etc

i suspect it might be harder if you're a foreign national, but that's a hunch, it's not based on actual knowledge :-)

kokopeli - what you've just said is music to my ears! i got a bit despondent when i heard the low numbers of NZ Int. Doc. Scholarships, but now i'm buoyed up again.

just yesterday i emailed six potential supervisors and one has already come back to me mentioning some funding!
