Maori Land

Is there, or has there ever been a plan to give land back to the Maori Tribes that may have been taken illegally in the past?

If so, are there areas to avoid on the North Island where owning/buying property is concerned?

There are legal battles (an moral ones) going on over land, but these seem ot be more over common land than anything else. Most land is being compensated in cash that has been built on, to the tribe it was seized from.

I believe there is some sort of guarantee somewhere that no private home owner / business owner /farmer etc will ever lose their land through this. The biggest fight is over the foreshore and seabed, but you'll get to see and hear a lot about that when you get here.

So no, there's nowhere you need to worry about buying, north or south!
