I'd be more likely to believe that a lit cigarette caused the explosion than a pole hitting the bottom of the tank. I can't recall the details, but petrol vapours/gasoline vapors (gosh but I'm multilingual!) can only ignite within a narrow range of oxygen concentration. Too little O2, as might be expected in a tank, and no boom.
Now my curiosity about the details of this case is piqued.
