It's counterpart is the rigid body truck (I dont know what you call these?!) which do not have a seperable trailer, and do not articulate.
I thought you called those "lorries". We just call them trucks, which is also short for "pickup truck", the personal vehicle with a cargo bed in back. So what's a "ute" - what we call an SUV? It probably has no relation to the Shoshonean tribe from which Utah was named. Bonnets and boots and wings, oh my!

My dining habits are rather German, since taking the language in high school. Unfortunately I still have trouble balancing some food on the back of the fork, ala the Brits. As the Old Dan Tucker song says, "I eats my peas with honey; I've done it all my life, It makes the peas taste funny, but it keeps them on the knife".

Oh, and James, save some Welly for me. I set my cap for her as soon as I saw her.

Lorries is just a broad term for trucks! Ute's are Utility vehicles, or pickup trucks. SUV's have been called many things here, namely 4x4's, trucks and jeeps, but are also called SUVs. Minivans (People carriers) are usually called a bus, van or people movers, sedans (saloons) are called sedans, station wagons (estate cars) are usually called station wagons or more commonly just wagons, coupe (coop to Americans and Coo-pay to europe)is a coupe (usually pronounced coop), hatchback is a hatchback and convertible is a convertible!

I think that just about covers every body style!

Yep. What Taffy said.

Oh, the "Caravan" by Dodge/Chrysler is a type of minivan to Americans.

To the commonwealth a "caravan" is the thing you tow behind you and that you can sleep in over night. A minivan is a minivan.

And if you ask an American what you call someone that "does their car up, rides around loud and fast" they don't call them "Boy Racers" as Kiwis do. The call them someone that "does their car up, rides around loud and fast".

Definitely 'obnoxious little twit'.

I like the Australian version of 'hoon' - doesn't sound as tolerant as 'boy racer'. We had one last night driving up and down the road. As soon as we thought he had gone and started to drift back to sleep, he came back with his oversized exhausts, speeding and leaving rubber on the road. Almost felt like going out and chucking a rock at the car.

Or "hoodlum"

I find it interesting to hear what the "Americn" stereotype is in NZ. I kind of was expecting Someone loud, wearing a cowboy hat and boots.

I thought "hoon" was also a Kiwi term. I like it. Does anyone know the etymology?

This explains a bit about hoons, but doesn't give much information as to how the name originated.

At the end of that Wickipedia article was the term "Petrolhead" - another good one!

Around here, the police have organized youth car racing events at a nearby drag racing strip. The aim is to reduce the racing on city streets. I suppose it's been effective, because they are getting more funding to continue the program. I wish some of our neighborhood hoons and geezer-hoons would save it for the drag strip :013:.
