Default Ah, those were the days!

[color=brown:1573a8c9ff]An excerpt taken from an account by a young British ship's electrician who decided he wanted to live in NZ. This is in the 1960s.[/color:1573a8c9ff]

I flew out from England, as all the cabins on the immigrant ships were booked up for two years in advance. My fianc?e and I had toured the government departments in Wellington, trying to get the paperwork necessary to move to this country, only to be told that my English passport was all I needed. I was suspicious at first, as it seemed too easy; something had to be wrong.

These suspicions proved to be groundless on my arrival at Whenuapai air base in 1963. The Customs and Immigration Control consisted of a small shed. I cleared customs and showed my passport to the immigration official, who asked me if I was here on holiday or here to live. I replied I would like to live here. He said, ?Good on yer mate? as he stamped my passport with a permanent residence stamp.

Our friend cam out in the 70s and he had changed completely by then. Not only did you need a job offer to get, but you also had to have somewhere to stay lined up in advance as well.

hehe, it always staggers me to think that the place was only settled by whites 150-200 years ago.
Just last night I was reading about William Cargill's (a relation of mine hopefully) life story until he started Invercargill back in 1870. Only a few generation back really, maybe great great something.

Default Ah, those were the days!

We first arrived in NZ in 1974 after a month travelling by sea on a Russian liner. Not many people emigrated by air, and it was useful having all of your belongings on the ship. No job was needed to get into NZ, just a British passport.

I remember visiting Auckland Airport a year or so later and it was basically one big warehouse building with birds flying around inside.

i'm sure William Cargill gets a mention or three in "Billy Connolly's World Tour of New Zealand" that was on telly.

In fact there's quite a lot of interesting stuff on that DVD,,

    Warning though ..
