Another health warning has been issued for a Rotorua lake and more are expected to follow. Water testing at Gisborne Point and Hinehopu at the eastern end of Lake Rotoiti has revealed a significant bloom of blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. Acting medical officer of health Dr Paul Martiquet said Environment Bay of Plenty's water sampling tests confirmed the blooms in those two areas.

"It's just a seasonal thing ... this is not uncommon for this time of year," Mr Martiquet said.

People are being asked not to use the lake for recreational purposes and to avoid skin contact with the water. They have also been warned against drinking water from the lake.

He said there were signs of bloom activity in other parts of Lake Rotoiti, but further sampling this week would confirm the extent. However, he does expect more health warnings to follow when weather conditions become even warmer.

A health warning remains in place for Lake Okaro, 25km south of Rotorua.

Ah, but the blue-green algae from Lake Rotoiti has a hyphen between the blue and the green. Perhaps that makes a difference. It?s the hyphen bit that?s toxic. [img:bb75e546a9]http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/mix/smile09.gif[/img:bb75e546a9]

Did we ought to be concerned that you appear to know the Holland and Barrett stock list off by heart?[img:bb75e546a9]http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/mix/slideoff.gif[/img:bb75e546a9]

a few years back we had the same problem in the UK, there were reports of dogs dying that had swum in affected rivers.

Yep, all different kinds o' b-g algae. We've got one too which kills a couple of dogs a year when they drink the water.

[b:6e23e1745c]Surfers ignore water pollution warning [/b:6e23e1745c]

    12.12.05 7.00am

Young surfers from throughout the country ignored a health warning and surfed polluted waters at St Clair, in Dunedin, on Saturday to compete in the final Gromsearch Series surfing event of the year.

The Dunedin City Council and Public Health South recommended staying out of the water but the competitors voted to carry on.

It's a good thing they're still immortal at that age.
