    [b:d364d6c48d]Suspicious powder disrupts inner city[/b:d364d6c48d]

    By Mathew Dearnaley

Several hundred Auckland office workers were evacuated and three women taken to hospital after suspicious white powder spilled from an envelope at an inner-city building yesterday. The three, staff of Southern Cross health insurance subsidiary Activa, were taken to Auckland City Hospital by ambulance in head-to-toe overalls as their clothes were bagged and sealed for decontamination.

The women were sent home last night, six hours after one of them opened the envelope at about 11.30am to find white power spilling over her computer keyboard, on the first floor of the 21-storey Quay Tower.

Southern Cross chief executive Ian McPherson said she would be monitored through the weekend, until tests of the material at a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry lab could determine its nature.

Southern Cross called emergency services immediately and advised the building management to shut down air-conditioning. It also closed its mail rooms and warned staff of all its Auckland offices and hospitals not to open any more letters or packages.

The building was evacuated and a section of northern Albert St remained closed for almost three hours as hazardous materials specialists among 30 firefighters removed the substance.

it is sometimes disturbing to read news like this, I first saw it on NZ herald website and find it disgusting. Not sure if it is the work of a prankster but certainly hope so because events like this if it is genuine terror threat will hurt the social security structure and eventually easily breakdown trusts between people.

I don't find that particulalry worrying. Britain has always had terrorism and bombing campaigns - much worse ones than NZ.

Finding traces of white powder is probably commonplace in the UK at the moment. Probably not newsworthy.

The (relative) lack of terrorism in NZ is one of the positives of living there. Look at the history of NZ terrorism and compare it with the UK history and there's no comparison.

The item wasn?t put on here to particularly worry anyone, just as an example that NZ isn?t exempt from the same problems facing the UK and US, despite its distance. No doubt the safety measures put into place in Auckland were a necessary precaution, as no one knows these days where these idiot types will strike next. The substance may still turn out to be harmless. Let?s hope so, as it?s a nice feeling to think that NZ is, at least, that little bit safer than the UK and US.

The problem is that once Al-Qaeda is no longer a threat another terrorist organisation will take its place.

The world is always a place of uncertainty. In the early 1900s we had the First World War, then the Second War in the late 30s/early 40s where an estimated 100 million people were killed (the numbers are still uncertain). Then we had the Cold war when everyone thought that the world was going to end. This was followed by the IRA campaign where several buses were blown up and hundreds were killed over 3 or 4 decades. Now we have Al-Qaeda who perpetrated the attack on the World Trade centre, the attack on the train in Madrid and the 50 or so deaths in London.

You'd think we would have learnt by thousands of years of history by now wouldn't you? Unfortunately, human nature is such that land disputes and wars will probably continue until the whole of the human race dies out.

I thinks it's good that you're highlighting the fact that NZ isn't perfect though, Mother Bear. It's easy to get carried away and think that NZ is some kind of Utopia but no where is, or ever will be.

As a follow on to the original post:

    [b:10787ea77d]Suspect white powder harmless [/b:10787ea77d]

    01.11.05 7.00am

Medical insurer Southern Cross began opening a backlog of 5000 letters yesterday afternoon after receiving confirmation that a mail-drop of suspicious white power was harmless.

Hundreds of workers were cleared from a 21-storey inner Auckland office building on Friday and three female employees of Southern Cross subsidiary Activa taken to hospital for tests after the powder spilled from an envelope which arrived in the mail.

They were sent home six hours later, but the insurance group kept its mailrooms closed in all its Auckland buildings and warned staff not to open any correspondence until the powder was identified.
